What will I learn on this module?
In the second year of your midwifery programme, you will be introduced to knowledge that will facilitate your understanding of complex physical, psychological and social situations that may arise throughout pregnancy and childbirth which may involve diverse care pathways. As the midwife is the coordinator for pregnant women with complex needs, you need an underpinning knowledge of the range of common conditions and issues and their potential impact on the woman, and family. This knowledge will enable you to begin to identify deviations from normal health and pregnancy and to assess, screen, plan, implement and evaluate care provision in partnership with women applying the principles of shared decision making when appropriate. This is in keeping with the framework for Quality Maternal and Newborn Care for all childbearing women and infants with complications. You will study a range of subjects to facilitate your learning for example, physical assessment and history taking, pathophysiology, diabetes, cardiac disease, venous thromboembolism and mental health. You will then be facilitated to integrate and apply your developing knowledge and skills to clinical practice. You will also be introduced to the variety of roles and responsibilities for women with complex issues within the pathways of care involved, with particular reference to that of the midwife.
How will I learn on this module?
The teaching and learning approaches for this module will be a mix of lectures, seminars, directed and independent learning, reflecting the notional student workload identified in this module. The lectures will provide key sources of policy, knowledge and theoretical evidence and will encourage you to connect to sources for independent learning. You will experience input from university lecturers with a wide range of experience in the topic areas to be covered. The workshops and seminars will use practice-based scenarios to challenge your integrative ability and will encourage learning from and application to practice. This will be further supported by alignment to the year long practice based module running concurrently.
You will be expected to engage with technology enhanced learning, for example on-line information, pre-reading, on-line tests and be supported to maintain evidence of your personal, professional and academic achievements.
How will I be supported academically on this module?
How will I be supported academically on this module? (SRS 0003) Please provide a brief overview of the academic support available to students, including any support that may be accessed outside formal scheduled teaching.
As with all other modules on the programme successful academic achievement requires a robust system of support and guidance to help you focus on your learning needs. There will be a module team, including a module lead and tutors delivering this module which will provide guidance and academic support to enable your engagement with the academic rigour of the module during lectures and seminars. There will also be small group tutorials with peer support. This support will contribute to the assessment of learning for the module. There is also extensive support accessible on-line as part of the university’s commitment to technology enhanced learning, for example the use of the eLearning portal and collaborative tools.
What will I be expected to read on this module?
All modules at Northumbria include a range of reading materials that students are expected to engage with. The reading list for this module can be found at: http://readinglists.northumbria.ac.uk
(Reading List service online guide for academic staff this containing contact details for the Reading List team – http://library.northumbria.ac.uk/readinglists)
What will I be expected to achieve?
Knowledge & Understanding:
1. Distinguish between the physiological and psychological changes in pregnancy and emerging pathology.
2. Analyse the complexity of physiological, psychological and social situations and contributory factors which may adversely affect pregnancy and childbirth.
Intellectual / Professional skills & abilities:
3. Discuss care management and optimisation of childbirth processes for women and their babies with complex needs.
4. Examine the midwife’s role in assessing, screening, planning, implementing and evaluating care tailored to pregnant women within complex care.
Personal Values Attributes (Global / Cultural awareness, Ethics, Curiosity) (PVA):
5. Explore and develop your personal capabilities and interpersonal skills to enable engagement with diverse client groups and the wider health care professional team.
How will I be assessed?
Formative:
On-line learning materials, that are self-assessed relating to pathophysiology (MLO 1 & 2).
Working collaboratively with peers and lecturers in workshops and seminars will provide you with feedback on your progress with the understanding of the module content (MLO 1, 2, 3, 4 & 5).
In addition, you will have opportunity for small group tutorial time, which will support the development of your summative assignment and provide feedback upon your progress (MLO 1, 2, 3, 4, 5).
Summative:
Analysis of care provision for a pregnant woman with complex needs (MLO 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5).
Your findings will be presented as a 2,500 word analysis of the identified complex situation outlining the assessment, screening, care planning, implementation and evaluation underpinned by the identified knowledge for practice and critical discussion of available evidence.

Module abstract
In this module, you will be introduced to the subject knowledge and skills for effective assessment, screening care planning and management of pregnant women, and their families with complex needs involving care across a variety of pathways. This will build on previous learning of anatomy, physiology and normal midwifery care from year one and evolve your understanding of pathophysiology and complex midwifery care. You will investigate the range of evidence that underpins the topics and use learning from practice to develop your clinical expertise. In addition, you will be given the opportunity to apply and integrate this in complex situations, including the need to collaborate with other healthcare professionals to provide seamless, safe care.
