MW0415 - Promoting Normal Processes in Midwifery Practice

What will I learn on this module?

You will learn about the anatomy and physiology of the non-pregnant female body prior to pregnancy and how this changes in pregnancy, birth and post birth periods .This will include an introduction to genetics, related to reproduction & midwifery practice and is in keeping with the Framework for Quality Maternal and Newborn Care (QMNC) and the category of Promoting Normal Processes. You will also learn about fetal and placental development together with the physiological changes a baby requires at birth and in the first few weeks of life. The principles of pharmacology will be discussed and elements of microbiology introduced. All topics which are explored will be relevant to the beginning of your professional journey and you will be assisted to apply this knowledge in supporting and promoting normality for childbearing women in class discussions of midwifery orientated case scenarios.

How will I learn on this module?

You will learn through interactive lectures, seminars, guided and independent learning. The lectures will cover theories that will enable you to complete guided work, which will then be discussed in seminar sessions.

How will I be supported academically on this module?

Support will include feedback from tutors during group work within interactive lectures and seminars, which will allow questions to be answered promptly. The seminars will also provide an opportunity for you to receive feedback on how your academic abilities are developing. In class and online formative tests will be used throughout the module, to allow you to assess your personal learning. Resources will be available to you on the electronic learning platform (eLP) and tutors may be contacted for support. A group tutorial will provide academic support focussed on the assessment task. A revision session in preparation for the Multiple Choice Questionnaire (MCQ) examination will include a shortened mock examination as a formative assessment to provide further support.

What will I be expected to achieve?

Knowledge & Understanding:
You will be expected to be able to:

1. Explain the anatomy and physiology of the non-pregnant woman relevant to midwifery practice.
2. Discuss the normal physiological changes in pregnancy, birth, post birth in the woman and fetus /baby, including basic genetics relating to human reproduction.
3. Describe the principles of pharmacology applied to midwifery which informs safe, effective medication in pregnancy, labour and post birth periods.
4. Describe the basic elements of microbiology identifying the application to midwifery practice.

Intellectual / Professional skills & abilities:
5. Apply an understanding of physiological changes to midwifery assessment in practice, in line with NMC competencies and Essential Skills Clusters (ESC).

How will I be assessed?

Formative assessment:
Verbal formative feedback will be given within each session, to enhance your understanding of your academic performance, level of engagement and meaning of learning in a professional programme (MLO 1-5).
Optional formative assessments will be available to you on the eLP to enable self-assessment of learning relating to each learning outcome and teacher led lectures.
Seminars using midwifery orientated case scenarios will enable you to apply learning from MLOs 1-4 to aid achievement of MLO5.
There will be the opportunity for small group tutorials prior to the summative assessment.

Summative assessment:
• The summative assessment is a multiple choice question examination.
• This will be carried out via BlackBoard Ultra, using Honorlock as a 60minute timed exam which includes 50 multiple choice questions). It will be accessed and completed remotely by students.
• The questions will assess module learning outcomes 1-5.
• Feedback will be given to the students once moderation of the marks has been carried out. This will involve group feedback to those who pass the exam, highlighting general strengths and weaknesses in the overall knowledge base around specific topics via BBU, and individual feedback via email to students who do not pass highlighting areas that they need to focus and reflect upon for future learning and the referral exam.





Module abstract

This module aims to provide you with knowledge and understanding of life sciences applied to midwifery practice and is in keeping with the Framework for Quality Maternal and Newborn Care (QMNC) and the practice category of Promoting Normal Processes. The subjects include anatomy, physiology, genetics, pharmacology and microbiology, introducing you to content which relates to safe midwifery practice and the assessment and promotion of normality. Similar modules in previous programmes have been very positively received by students, acknowledging the confidence gained by understanding explanations relating to clinical assessment of maternal, fetal and newborn wellbeing. It is positioned at the beginning of the programme and will allow you to develop and explore these subject areas in a safe non- clinical environment, prior to your first placement. Formative assessment throughout the module aims to enhance your learning in preparation for this and the summative assessment. Current evidence and research will be embedded into the subject content reflecting this professional requirement as indicated by the NMC and employers.
