MW0514 - Appraising Midwifery Evidence

What will I learn on this module?

This module will develop and apply your skills in midwifery enquiry and appraisal. You will explore a range of research designs and methods and consider their appropriateness and impact upon the midwifery evidence base enabling you to further combine clinical knowledge and skills to tailor care to women’s circumstances and needs in keeping with The Framework for Quality Maternal and Newborn Care (QMNC) . This will include if, how and why women and their families may be engaged in evaluating and researching midwifery practice. The module will help you to appreciate the ethical considerations and the processes, tools and metrics used to assess and appraise the quality of midwifery research and evaluation. This will enable you to appraise the appropriateness of the methods used to evaluate midwifery practice and to consider their place in the development of midwifery. Implicit to the module is a research led element where you will explore issues, concepts and theory, pertinent to your midwifery practice project in year three.

How will I learn on this module?

You will learn through a combination of lectures, seminars and directed study, which will be related to and informed by your practice placement experiences. Lectures will introduce a variety of concepts, theories and signpost further reading and learning activities. In addition, action learning sets, which are a hands on experiential approach involving you working with a small group of your peers, will enable you to explore and apply concepts introduced in lectures and will be facilitated by a member of the module team. This will enable you to rehearse your developing skills, with opportunities to engage in simulated activity involving research and evaluation methods and techniques.
A range of resources will be used to consolidate your midwifery evidence appraisal skills, including lecture material, reading, interactive activities and involvement of midwives engaged in midwifery research, practice development / evaluation. You will be expected to make active use of the electronic learning platform (eLP) using it as a starting point for your own reading.

How will I be supported academically on this module?

The tutors involved in delivering this module will provide guidance and academic counselling to ensure that you are able to confidently engage with the academic rigour of this module. This dialogue will be face-to-face in lectures, seminars or individual tutorials and is an essential aspect of the programme’s assessment for learning strategy. Action learning sets will form an opportunity for tutor and peer support and feedback throughout the module as you rehearse your developing insights and abilities concerning midwifery evidence appraisal. Information, source material and suggestions for directed and independent reading and activities will be available via the module eLP. In addition, the module will be supported by University library staff and resources, including study skills support packages. The library service caters for all your learning needs, has extensive access to electronic texts and tutorials that will directly support the development of academic skills aimed at improving your critical thinking and analytical writing.

How will I be assessed?

Action learning sets will form an opportunity for you to explore and rehearse your developing insights and skills regarding midwifery evidence appraisal, provide you with academic, and peer feedback throughout the module (MLO 1, 2, 3, 4).

In addition, you will have opportunity for small group tutorial time, which will support the development of your summative assignment and provide feedback upon your individual progress (MLO 1, 2, 3, 4).

Utilise a recognised appraisal / quality metric to critique a piece of midwifery evidence.

Your findings will be presented as a 2500 word written assignment which will be submitted electronically via TurnItIn on the module BlackBoard site (MLO 1, 2, 3, 4).
Individual feedback will be given via BBU Grade Centre.





Module abstract

One of the pre-requisites to becoming a midwife is the ability to make the most appropriate practice decisions. This relies on the midwife having the knowledge and skills to identify, appraise and critique the quality, appropriateness and sufficiency of the evidence used to inform and evaluate practice. This includes exploration of research design and mechanisms used to evaluate midwifery practice and research. Ethical considerations within research and practice development are explored including the engagement of childbearing women in research and evaluation. The module will continue your journey to becoming a midwife who can make evidence informed practice decisions, which will benefit the care of women, babies and families.
The module contributes to research rich learning in the curriculum, utilising a range of teaching and learning strategies. This includes action learning sets, which provide an experiential approach for you to rehearse your developing skills, with opportunities to engage in simulated activity involving research, practice development and evaluation methods and techniques.

Courses starting in 2021 are offered as a mix of online and face to face teaching due to the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic.
