What will I learn on this module?

The module explores the aspirations, content and context of delivering high quality care, and is informed by the Quality Maternal and Newborn Care Framework (QMNC) where evidence has illustrated the impact of educated midwives on maternal and perinatal health. The module culminates in you undertaking a Midwifery Practice Project where you will have the opportunity to select an aspect of your midwifery practice which you will critique from a personal, professional and organisational perspective and produce recommendations for your future practice. The module will assist you to deconstruct and reconstruct practice using in depth analysis of the evidence base, creative thinking, alternative theoretical perspectives and critical theory. In addition, learning will embrace the impact that organisational culture and personal attributes may have upon the success of developing your practice and the potential contribution of practice development models and tools to the health of women and their families. During the development of your midwifery project you will be encouraged to actively reflect upon your practice experiences and developing professional and graduate attributes. You will have the opportunity to consider means of disseminating your work including further development activity, study or publication.

How will I learn on this module?

You will learn through a combination of lectures, workshops and directed study which will be related to and informed by your personal practice experiences and project focus. Key lectures will introduce advanced theory and signpost further reading and learning activities. Classroom, directed and independent learning will be integrated through a process of action learning activities within action learnings sets. Action learning sets will be a key teaching and learning strategy and will involve you engaging in workshops with a small group of your peers and be facilitated by a member of the module team. The action learning sets will involve discussion, debate and challenge which will facilitate you developing insights and skills of personal reflexivity and creativity essential to the development of your project. A post submission workshop will be available to explore opportunities for and processes to develop and adapt your work for dissemination and publication.
The module resources will be accessible via the e-learning portal (eLP), and will be a useful starting point for development of your project. You will have an identified project supervisor from the module team who will guide and support you to explore further resources as applicable to your individual midwifery practice project focus.

How will I be supported academically on this module?

Action learning sets will form an opportunity for academic and peer support and feedback throughout the module. Information, source material and suggestions for directed and independent reading and activities will be available via the module eLP. The tutors involved in delivering this module will provide guidance and academic counselling to ensure that you are able to confidently engage with the academic rigour of this module. This dialogue will be face-to-face in lectures, workshops and individual tutorials and is an essential aspect of the programme’s assessment for learning strategy. In addition, the module will be supported by University library staff and resources including extensive access to electronic texts and tutorials that will directly support the development of academic skills aimed at improving your critical thinking and analytical writing.

How will I be assessed?

Action learning sets will form an opportunity for you to explore and debate your practice project and provide academic and peer feedback throughout the module (MLO 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7).

In addition, you will have opportunity for individual tutorial time which will support the development of your summative assignment and provide individual feedback upon your progress (MLO 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, and 7).

Module abstract

Within midwifery practice, evidence must be integrated and applied to the individual needs of the women, baby and family, to ensure care is not only safe and effective, but also appropriate and tailored to maternal needs and wishes. As a midwife you will need to be able to make evidence informed practice decisions which will benefit the care of women, babies and families. Midwives frequently work in complex contexts, working with a diverse caseload of women with differing needs and practice organisational demands. Therefore, you need to appreciate the potential impact that personal, practice and organisational values, discourses and contexts may have upon your midwifery practice and associated care decisions. In addition, when you enter the midwifery profession, there is an expectation you will contribute to the professional knowledge base, by evolving knowledge from and through practice.

The module will complete your midwifery research journey on the BSc (Hons) Midwifery Studies equipping you with the personal reflexive insights and professional skills to effectively use evidence and identify potential opportunities for practice and evidence development. Your learning will culminate in the production of a practice project involving a detailed critique of an aspect of your practice and an associated practice development plan. The module complements the research rich learning in the curriculum, utilising a range of teaching and learning strategies. This includes action learning sets, which provides an experiential hand on approach and involves discussion, debate and challenge which will facilitate your developing insights and skills of personal reflexivity and creativity essential to the development of your project.
