What will I learn on this module?

You will learn the following areas: enterprise wireless deployment elements and methodologies, antenna characteristics, mobile wireless protocols including 802.11 protocols, operation technologies underpinning wireless communication including those from the 802.11, 802.15 and 802.16 families, wireless security issues.

How will I learn on this module?

The module will be delivered using lectures, laboratories and a supported research assignment. It will be assessed via an examination and a research paper. The examination will focus on material from the lecture series and the research paper will be used to assess the research assignment.

How will I be supported academically on this module?

Staff will deliver both lectures and laboratory sessions and support you during your extended assignment. The module is supported by discussion forums that can be used to explore issues outside of classroom time.

What will I be expected to achieve?

Knowledge & Understanding:
1. Be able to describe, explain critically and analyse mobile wireless data communication technology.

Intellectual / Professional skills & abilities:
2. Perform a pre-deployment critical site survey for wireless LANs.
3. Analyse 802.11 protocol performance.
4. Make decisions on enterprise 802.11 deployment in terms of requirements.

5. Understand the global nature of WLAN utilisation, standardisation and regulation.

How will I be assessed?

Students will be assessed via an examination and a research assignment.
The examination will focus on materials delivered in the lecture series and address MLO 1, 3, 5. The exam paper consists of two parts. Part 1 is MCQ questions which will be used to assess factual knowledge points. Part 2 are open end discussion questions which will be used to assess students’ comprehension, analysis and application capabilities.
The research assignment will be used to address MLO 2 and 4. Feedback will be provided through a marking proforma.





Module abstract

This module is designed to be suitable for a variety of networking professional roles including those wishing to gain a deeper understanding of 802.11 protocols, mobile networks, security and enterprise deployment. Additionally, it is suitable for wireless network administrators and support or design staff requiring a greater understanding of the new technologies and applications of modern converged networks and delegates seeking Certified Wireless Network Associate (or similar) certification.
