Are you interested in a career in clinical psychology?

Our MSc Foundations in Clinical Psychology programme is the first to offer integrated placements in the North of England and is designed for psychology graduates looking to specialise in the field of clinical psychology.

A work placement is a core element of the programme and this will give you the opportunity to gain valuable clinical experience.

Guided by experts in the field of clinical psychology, you will combine this practical experience with a thorough grounding in relevant areas of theory and research including formulation, functional analysis and models of clinical intervention.

This highly-specialised, full-time programme is the perfect foundation for those interested in pursuing a PhD or a Doctorate in Clinical Psychology (DClin) as well as those who wish to work within a healthcare setting.

Please note that this MSc does not guarantee you entry onto a Clinical Psychology doctorate programme or lead to a professional qualification as a clinical psychologist.

Modules & Learning

You will develop a comprehensive knowledge of the fundamentals of clinical psychology, exploring psychological assessment, psychological intervention and professional issues, as well as research methods through discussion-based sessions, interactive lectures and tutorials and a clinical work placement.

Placements will be in relevant settings, under the supervision of an experienced clinical psychologist and are expected to be a minimum of one day per week.

Research workshops will allow you to enhance your qualitative and quantitative research competence and develop your research skills for the pursuit of publication.

You will be encouraged to take responsibility for your own learning, demonstrating applied understanding and knowledge at the forefront of the discipline and to defend your work effectively to a wide range of audiences.

Assessment is varied and may include written assignments, such as laboratory reports, case presentations, reflective logs, research article critiques and reviews, as well as the production of a major research thesis.

Teaching Staff

You will learn from experienced clinical psychologists and staff who are leading research development in the field.

In fact, our strength in psychology research has significantly increased, with Northumbria ranked top 20 in the UK for research, which has outstanding reach and significant impact on individuals and communities (REF 2014).

Current staff research projects include; the development and evaluation of screening tools for clinical conditions; promoting emotion recognition in individuals with developmental disabilities and the application of functional approaches to promoting psychological wellbeing in schools. The staff team has an excellent track record in supporting student publications.

Facilities

You will learn in a professional research environment with access to state of the art laboratories. You will be able to collect and analyse data using the most up-to-date software tools and will benefit from access to the eLearning Portal where electronic reading lists, lecture capture and online feedback tools support your learning.

A designated working space is available for our postgraduate students and you will benefit from working with staff who are at the cutting-edge of their fields in innovative research areas.

Research-rich Learning

Research is embedded into the structure of this degree, and from the very beginning you will experience a mix of research-led, research-tutored and research-based teaching.

You will learn how knowledge in clinical psychology is developed through research and how to design and carry out research studies using a range of methodologies. Developing your own advanced research skills and critical understanding, you will have the opportunity to work alongside active researchers at the forefront of research in the clinical psychology fields. You will be encouraged to ask and explore innovative research questions, reflecting upon the research process and knowledge creation, culminating in the production of a research thesis.
