What will I learn on this module?

This module introduces you to notions of globalisation and the impact upon health, policy development, professional practice and service delivery. It will encourage you to consider the nature of health care and the challenges it faces within a contemporary global community. Consideration of global, national and local priorities and demands will feature and you are expected to develop a comprehensive critical awareness of globalisation and responses to health care demands. You will also be expected to provide some commentary on the impact of nursing care and patient experience.

The main content of the module includes:

Existing and emerging global health issues such as: Cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, obesity, mental health, cancers, women’s health, maternal and child health, care of the elderly, infectious diseases and outbreaks – malaria, HIV and AIDS, Ebola, H1N1, STI’s and sexual health. RTA’s Health inequalities. Tobacco, drugs and alcohol.

Globalisation: Global politics, poverty, global burden of disease, war and conflict, displacement and migration: including refugees. Health systems and health policy development. Social justice, human rights and ethics. Cultural dimensions.

Structures supporting global health: WHO, international health movements. The State, NGO’s and voluntary organisations. Universal health care and access. Nursing development and nursing heroes. The westernisation of nursing. Global and local workforce issues.

Through exploring these topics you will develop a deeper appreciation of critical analysis to understand how globalisation impacts upon health.

How will I learn on this module?

On this module there are many opportunities and approaches to learning. These consist of key note lectures, structured seminars, directed learning and independent learning. Through group work presentations exploring various health issues and various health systems, you have an opportunity to share and explore different cultures and approaches to health care using enquiry based learning (EBL) approaches. Both human rights and ethics are identified in the module content. There are 2 formal group presentations, one on women’s health and one on global health systems. You are expected to present individually a ten minute referenced presentation followed by a discussion with your peers. Material is posted regularly on the elp along with web links to relevant online videos, podcasts, documents, and sites of information for you to access as directed and to use as self-directed learning. The subject expertise of the group is acknowledged and you will have the opportunity to undertake student led presentations based on the developing enquiry you are engaged with and the assignment work. There is ongoing feedback on your progress through seminar work and individual tutorials. There is allocated tutor guided and student independent learning hours attached to this module.

How will I be supported academically on this module?

Summative assessment. The assignment for this module consists of a 4,000 word essay on a topic of the student’s choice. This is discussed in conjunction with the marker. The work must contain elements of the module themes and content as applicable. There should be a clear topic area defined, a discussion on the impact of globalisation along with consequences for nursing practice and recommendations. The module reading material will also guide the student with critique development.

Formative assessment. Seminar work. Clear instructions will be given to the students in advance of seminars. There will be feedback given to each student following seminar presentations and on-going classroom based discussions. They will have an opportunity to reflect on the strengths and weaknesses of the seminar work presentations.

Tutorials. One to one tutorial time is allocated within this module and the student can also have assignment work supported through email correspondence with the marker. All feedback on assignment progress will be given within the module tutorial allowance.
You are expected to produce and hand in 1,000 words draft piece/proposal supporting the final assignment by week 35 and the marker will provide feedback within the module tutorial allowance.

You are expected to remain in contact with the guidance tutor in one to one tutorials and with your peers in small group supportive seminars.

How will I be assessed?

FORMATIVE ASSESSMENT
You will have opportunity submit 500 words outlining the structure of your summative assignment around the middle of module. You will then receive written formative feedback from the module marker, which will give you chance to reflect on the formative comments and therefore inform your final submission.
There will also be an opportunity for a face to face tutorial within the module tutorial allowance. Feedback will also be given with the presentation work. [MLO 1,2,3,4]


SUMMATIVE ASSESSMENT
A 4,000 word written assignment.
You will identify, discuss and critique the impact of globalisation on the chosen topic area giving particular attention to health inequalities, human rights and ethics, where applicable. You will discuss the implications for Nursing and Healthcare practice development. [MLO 1,2,3,4]

Module abstract

This module will give you the opportunity to explore global health issues and along with developing your understanding of globalisation, you will be able to contextualise and appreciate the factors that influence contemporary ‘modern’ global diseases. You will have an opportunity to explore your practice areas and expertise through group work. This will further develop an appreciation of global health today, along with the challenges that nurse’s face. The critical analytical skills that you will develop will help you to challenge dominant ideas and beliefs on health and illness the knowledge and skills developed through seminar work will assist you in you in your career and future.
