What will I learn on this module?

This practice module will provide you with a unique opportunity to develop skills and knowledge directly relevant to your current practice placement experiences. The practice modules in each year of your programme will both support your learning while you are in practice and provide an environment, within university, to consolidate the skills and knowledge necessary to progress effectively.
During the first year, you will learn the fundamental skills that are necessary for safe, effective and professional practice. Prior to your first placement there are a number of mandatory sessions which will enable you to practice with confidence to protect your patients. These sessions will include, moving and handling (M&H), basic life support (BLS), equality and diversity and infection prevention.
During the majority of your first year clinical placements you will return to university for one day a week to reflect on your experiences, learn together with your peers and examine theoretical concepts that will enhance your practice. Sessions will focus on a range of subjects including patient assessment, recording of vital signs and effectively monitoring a patient’s condition. You will learn about models of care, professional standards and basic medicine calculation and management. There will also be opportunities to participate in simulated education utilising a range of specialist technology and taught by experts.
These dynamic learning opportunities will help illustrate how you can gather evidence of your increasing abilities and confidence. You will learn how to develop a professional portfolio, how to critically reflect and how to self-assess. You will learn about the importance of patient centred care and will be asked to reflect effectively on service user feedback. These skills are the start of your development as an evidence-based practitioner.

How will I learn on this module?

You will learn through a variety of methods, which will include key lectures, practical sessions based in a simulated clinical environment and a number of seminars and workshops which will utilise enquiry based learning (EBL). In addition you will spend much of your time in practice placements consolidating and learning new clinical skills.
During your time in university you will work with and learn from your peers and also be provided with the opportunity to link with fellow students on other health programmes to facilitate inter-professional learning. This is a unique aspect of the practice modules facilitating future team-work and reflecting the realities of delivering care in practice.
We are fortunate to have experienced student volunteers (learning leaders) from previous cohorts who will share their experiences and advice, assisting in your transition into nursing, practice environments and university life in general.
Your clinical mentors, in your practice placements, will support and guide your learning opportunities, working in partnership with practice learning teams (PLTs) from the university and practice placement facilitators (PPFs) to enrich your learning opportunities through observation, role modelling and facilitated sessions.
Learning in the classroom and in practice will be supplemented by a breadth of e-learning packages such as safeMedicate, e-portfolio (Pebble+) and the skills for practice website. You will be given specific directed learning activities, such as workbooks, to guide your development and you will also be expected to engage in self-directed study that helps develop you as a lifelong learner and will enrich your academic abilities.

How will I be supported academically on this module?

A strength of our current nursing delivery is the strong clinical links and robust support network we have for students studying in clinical practice. We will utilise this network to provide you with the support you need while on placement, this will include university tutors with specific links to all of your placements, who will visit you in practice. Within the practice setting your will be allocated qualified mentors to guide and assist you in achieving the practice requirements of the module. You will be given details of your future placements and encouraged to engage in prior placement learning. This will include guidance on how to access details of the full range of learning opportunities associated with your future placement.

Your allocated personal tutor (PT) will be part of the practice module teams in each year of the programme. You will meet them regularly and they will deliver some of the module content. This will provide you with consistent support and regular access to both pastoral and academic guidance. You will also have the opportunity to meet with learning leaders who provide peer guidance and advice based on their own experience.
You will have access to the module electronic learning platform (eLP) where you will find a range of learning materials, videos, workbooks and e-learning packages. All lectures and assessment advice sessions will be recorded and available for you to review at your leisure. The module will utilise formative assessment and peer feedback throughout. This feedback can be utilised to, develop, support and enhance your practice and your graded assessment at the end of the module.

4. You will develop an awareness of your own limitations, applying evidence to perform a range of fundamental practical skills in a safe and effective way.
5. You will be able to identify the impact of an effective nursing assessment on the health, wellbeing and safety of service users within nursing.
6. You will develop a knowledge and understanding of basic medicine calculations.

How will I be assessed?

Formative:
You will have the opportunity to receive immediate formative feedback on fundamental skills and knowledge demonstrated through simulation based experience including a formative OSCE assessment.
You will receive written formative feedback on performance in practice from clinical mentors at specific points in your placements.
You will be encouraged to share evidence and your e-portfolio with your peers and personal tutor helping you self assess and reflect.
You will be able to utilise safeMedicate (an e-learning package) as a self-assessment tool to gauge your competence to carry out medicine calculations.

Summative:
Your summative assessment comprises of two components:

Part 1: PASS/FAIL
You will need to achieve all progression criteria identified in the practice assessment document (PAD), demonstrating professionalism and practicing safely and effectively at all times.
MLO 1, 2, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8

Part 2:100% Weighting
You will provide a written evaluation of three pieces of evidence from your practice portfolio, one of which must be a critical reflection of service user feedback. These evaluations should be 750 words in length each.

You will receive verbal and written feedback on your summative assessment components through your personal tutor and practice mentor.

Module abstract

This is the first practice module of your nursing programme. This unique module will combine learning in university and in clinical placements. It will help you develop the fundamental skills that are necessary for safe, effective and professional practice and give you the key skills for a successful career in nursing During your clinical placements you will return to university one day a week to reflect on your experiences and learn together with your peers in workshops and seminars. Sessions will focus on a range of clinical and theoretical subjects that support your learning in practice. There will also be opportunities to participate in simulated education utilising a range of specialist technology. You will spend much of your time in a variety of exciting practice placements, learning new clinical skills. Clinical mentors will support and guide your learning opportunities, working in partnership with academic teams from the university. As you progress through the module you will learn how to critically reflect on your own performance and illustrate your development and growing confidence in a professional portfolio.
