What will I learn on this module?

This module will enable you to explore the concepts of care, compassion, communication, competence, commitment and courage (6Cs) from a variety of perspectives, reflecting the different areas of nursing practice. You will study the theory and research evidence that underpins the module themes and will consider its application within experiential learning activities in module sessions. The underpinning values of the Nursing and Midwifery Council Code will be used as a framework to help you develop those skills which enable nurses to prioritise people and practise effectively building caring, professional relationships. The module will explore the art of nursing and the philosophies of holism and humanism that are fundamental to nursing practice. You will be enabled to develop transferable skills that demonstrate respect, dignity, empathy and unconditional positive regard within empowering relationships. You will build on your existing experience and abilities to explore a range of communication skills nurses need in order to demonstrate effective listening and responding to patients. Challenging situations for nurses can arise in clinical practice and you will use scenario-based activities to learn and practise the communication skills used by professional nurses to deliver safe and effective care. Active engagement with module materials and learning opportunities will help you develop the independent learning skills required within the module. Key themes of reflection and self-awareness will be integrated throughout the module which will foster the enquiring, analytical approach to your practice and development that is required as both a student nurse and a future professional registrant.

How will I learn on this module?

You will learn through a variety of learning / teaching strategies to facilitate integration of theory and practice. Opportunities will be provided for you to examine and explore your role in provision of collaborative care based on the highest standards, knowledge and competence. In accordance with research–rich learning, underpinning theories and concepts will be explored in lectures and seminars reflecting the contemporary evidence base supporting the module themes. Learning / teaching strategies will include experiential and reflective learning approaches using self and peer reflection to facilitate your self-awareness and skill development. Peer group learning will be a dominant feature within the module sessions and simulation via role play activities will aid development of your skills for the provision of individualised care that encompasses compassion, professionalism and effective communication. Adult learning philosophy underpins the module; you will engage in extensive reading, information retrieval and will explore and apply published research to your academic study and clinical practice. Through independent learning you will complete essential guided activities that will feed into subsequent timetabled sessions within the module. The learning and teaching strategies employed will encourage you to explore the symbiotic relationship of theory and practice. Module teaching staff will support you and the learning / teaching and assessment methods used will allow the beliefs and values inherent within the module to be modelled appropriately. The skills you will develop during the module will be transferable to your ongoing academic, theoretical and practical development within the programme and as a future registrant.

How will I be supported academically on this module?

Academic staff from all fields of nursing will be involved in the delivery of the module and will offer support to you both within timetabled sessions and outwith formal timetabled contact. Teaching staff will provide academic support via both face-to-face tutorials and electronic support through media such as email and e-discussions. Staff will support you, as an individual, facilitating your learning in line with the module philosophy. Resources to support your academic development will be available via ‘Blackboard’ which is an electronic learning platform (eLP). Copies of all module materials such as essential module information and lesson Powerpoints will be available to you here, electronically. You will also have access via the eLP to the module’s electronic reading list. You will have access to an extensive range of electronic sources through Northumbria University’s well-equipped e-library which include resources such as SkillsPlus, e-books and a vast array of electronic databases and journal articles to support your learning. The Technology Enhanced Learning approaches used will also contribute to further development of your information technology skills which are vital transferable skills and are an inherent part of contemporary healthcare delivery. Additional support with information technology issues is available through Northumbria University’s IT Helpline. You can also use the Ask4help service which is available to provide any individual support or help with queries you may have in relation to your studies both in the module and the wider programme.

How will I be assessed?

Formative assessment (MLOs 1-5):
Throughout the module seminars, workshops and practical simulation activities, you will receive ongoing verbal feedback from both module facilitators and your peers. Formative assessment will involve you reflecting on a digitally recorded simulated care experience (role play). You will work in a trio and be recorded in the role of nurse interacting with a ‘simulated patient’ played by a peer; another peer will act as an observer. Your peers will provide written feedback on your simulated role play and you will also conduct self-assessment. This feedback is formative and will help you to evaluate and learn from your simulated role play. The process will also enable you to demonstrate a caring approach in the provision of feedback to yourself and to your peers as well as helping you to develop your individual and group reflective skills. Afterwards, during your directed study time you will engage in detailed analysis of your recording in the role of nurse. You will receive written guidance on this process, leading to evaluation of your demonstration of effective communication for compassionate care in the recording. From this process, you will identify your own personal strengths and areas for development regarding your communication skills and the provision of compassionate care. You will have the opportunity to discuss your reflections with your peers and a member of the module teaching staff and will receive verbal feedback.

Summative assessment:
The summative assessment will be a 2000 word written reflective assignment that will use learning from the formative assessment to address the marking criteria. (MLOs 1-5).





Module abstract

The module will enhance your professional approach and clinical skills required in order to provide compassionate, individualised, person centred holistic care to patients. You will be confident in practice, knowing that your learning within the module lectures, seminars and practical sessions is based on theory and research evidence. The learning / teaching approaches include technology enhanced learning which will develop your information literacy skills that are crucial in contemporary healthcare. You will engage in self and peer reflection via experiential practical skills workshops and simulated care activities. These strategies will increase your self-awareness and facilitate your development as a caring and compassionate student nurse and future registrant who demonstrates effective communication with patients, relatives and colleagues. The transferable skills that you will practise during the module and the ongoing building and honing of these skills during the programme will equip you for the requirements of professional practice and future employment.
