What will I learn on this module?

This module introduces you to the Physiotherapy profession seeking to re-contextualise your previous study and life experiences and explore how these can be applied and developed through an individualised learning approach. Through enquiry-based learning, you will explore the fundamental skills of Physiotherapy. Orientated around professional and key analytical skills, you will develop your abilities in the assessment of function, understanding of movement and professional communications and conduct.
Working to meet the standards necessary for professional registration, you will have the opportunity to further progress your skills in the practice environment through clinical practice placement-based learning periods across the year. During these periods, you will have the opportunity to integrate your learning from co-requisite modules to evaluate and further advance your communication, collaborative and inter-professional working abilities and develop and safe and effective practice in the “real world”.

How will I learn on this module?

You will have the opportunity to participate in an enquiry-based learning approach that will promote peer and self- coaching to meet the module learning outcomes through exploration of structured and staged skill-based tasks and scenarios. Simulation will play a key role in your learning within a workshop driven module, in developing your professional knowledge, skills, values and behaviours. Staff will introduce you to concepts, information and practical skills and facilitate reflection on your development through self and group directed study. Thus you will have the opportunity to practice and frame skills (practical and intellectual) that will be evidenced in the compilation of an e-skills portfolio to showcase your learning within the academic setting. In addition to the e-skills portfolio, there will opportunities for you to review and consolidate learning across the module through your participation in two Collaborative Structured Practical Skills Evaluation (CSPSE) workshops.

In developing a ‘community of learning’ within a professional framework, you will be expected to attend teaching sessions, be dressed appropriately for practicals, behave in a professional manner, and engage and contribute to the learning of yourself and others.

How will I be supported academically on this module?

Successful academic achievement requires a system of robust support and guidance to help you focus on your learning needs. In addition to
the pastoral support you will receive, the tutors involved in delivering this module will provide guidance and academic counselling to ensure
that you are able to confidently engage with the academic and practical rigour of this module. This dialogue will be face to face in workshops with tutorial support available, and is an essential aspect of the programme’s assessment for learning strategy. Extensive support is also accessible online as part of the University’s commitment to technology enhanced learning. This employs the use of the e-learning portal, social networking and collaborative tools.

A central feature the academic support available to you is the service provided by the University Library. This 24/7 service caters for all your
learning needs, has extensive access to electronic texts and tutorials that will directly support the development of academic skills aimed at
improving your critical thinking and communication skills.

Knowledge & Understanding:
1. Integrate knowledge of normal anatomy, physiology and movement, and apply it to the effective assessment and treatment planning for patients with a range of common pathologies.
2. Demonstrate safe and effective execution of manual handling for a variety of physical disabilities.

1. Discuss and apply professional competencies both theoretically and in practice, with patient and health professional interactions.
2. Develop self-directed learning strategies in order to meet the goals of a MSc in Physiotherapy.

1. Demonstrate the ability to promote and protect the interests of service users and carers from a diverse cultural background.

How will I be assessed?

Module formative assessment opportunittes are provided within developmental Collaborative Structured Practical Evaluation (CSPE) workshops staged at two points across the module, along with completion and submission of the e-skills portfolio. Feedback as an inclusive activity by students, peers, and staff will be undertaken


The module summative assessment will take the form of as practical viva, providing the opportunity to demonstrate your underpinning knowledge of normal anatomy, common pathologies and their likely clinic presentation; safe and effective therapeutic handling skills and the effective assessment of common clinical conditions.

In addition you will undertake clinical practice placement-based learning periods in which you will be assessed on your ability to apply your developing skills to the clinical context.

Module abstract

In this module you will develop knowledge and skills in relation to a range of professional and clinical skills including the analysis of normal anatomy, physiology and movement, and how this informs common clinical presentations. It provides a unique opportunity to learn fundamental skills from the outset of the programme, and apply them to practice. Through case study driven interactive workshops, you will be encouraged to develop behaviours and values underpinned by our professional codes of conduct.The module develops a skillset to support safe and effective practice of foundation Physiotherapy skills and apply within a clinical environments from the very beginning of the programme.

The module assessment strategy will provide you with the opportunity to recontextualise your prior learning and life experience, directly apply to clinical practice through a rigorous, highly practical and enjoyable enquiry-based learning approach.
