What will I learn on this module?

In this module you will explore how physiotherapy supports people in vulnerable circumstances across the spectrum of acute and critical care, rehabilitation and long term supported management. You will consider the needs and values of individuals who are acutely unwell as well as the complexities of multi pathology, and how these apply to physiotherapy practice. You will be criticially examined on your ability to adapt your therapeutic approach to meet individual needs across physiotherapy specialities, with the expectation that you develop your skills in supporting people with physical, mental, cognitive and emotional needs.

The module will facilitate development an integrated, person-centred approach that will enable you to further develop the practical and clinical decision-making skills to support effective physiotherapy practice that will be further evidencd across your periods of clinical practice placement learning.

How will I learn on this module?

You will have the opportunity to participate in an enquiry-based learning approach that will promote peer and self coaching to meet the module learning outcomes through exploration of structured case scenarios. Workshops will integrate theoretical frameworks of person centred practice with different sources of evidence to support physiotherapy approaches in more complex settings, while supporting development of practical and communication skills. Simulation will play a key role in your learning within a workshop driven module, in developing your professional knowledge, skills, values and behaviours. Staff will introduce you to concepts, information and practical skills and facilitate reflection on your development through self and group directed study. Thus you will have the opportunity to practice and frame skills (practical and intellectual) that will be evidenced in the compilation of an e-skills portfolio to showcase your learning within the academic setting. In addition to the e-skills portfolio, there will opportunities for you to review and consolidate learning across the modue through your participation in two Collaborative Structured Practical Skills Evaluation (CSPSE) workshops.

In developing a ‘community of learning’ within a professional framework, you will be expected to attend teaching sessions, be dressed appropriately for practicals, behave in a professional manner, and engage and contribute to the learning of yourself and others.

How will I be supported academically on this module?

Successful academic achievement requires a system of robust support and guidance to help you focus on your learning needs. In addition to
the pastoral support you will receive, the tutors involved in delivering this module will provide guidance and academic counselling to ensure
that you are able to confidently engage with the academic and practical rigour of this module. This dialogue will be face to face in workshops with tutorial support available, and is an essential aspect of the programme’s assessment for learning strategy. Extensive support is also accessible online as part of the University’s commitment to technology enhanced learning. This employs the use of the e-learning portal, social networking and collaborative tools.

A central feature the academic support available to you is the service provided by the University Library. This 24/7 service caters for all your
learning needs, has extensive access to electronic texts and tutorials that will directly support the development of academic skills aimed at
improving your critical thinking and communication skills.

1. Critically appraise person centred approaches and healthcare philosophy within physiotherapy
2. Critically explore the role of physiotherapy within interprofessional and inter-agency teams
3. Synthesise information from complex patient assesments into appropriate treatment plans

How will I be assessed?

Module formative assessment opportunittes are provided for you within developmental Collaborative Structured Practical Evaluation (CSPE) workshops staged at two points across the module, along with completion and submission of the e-skills portfolio. Feedback as an inclusive activity by students, peers, and staff will be undertaken.

The module summative assessment will take the form of a 4000 word written assignment. The assessment will provide an opportunity to demonstrate your understanding of person-cenred physiotherapy based on an issue generated by service users who have experienced being acutely unwell or living with a complex condition. Written individual feedback will be provided along with general cohort feedback provided via the e-Learning Portal (eLP, Blackboard)/e-mail/social media.

In addition you will undertake clinical practice placement-based learning periods in which you will be assessed on your ability to apply your developing skills to the clinical context.

Module abstract

In this module you will build on the knowledge and skills from year one to develop your physiotherapy approach in meeting the needs of people with complex needs. Interactive workshops delivered by service users, clinicians and academic staff, will consolidate existing clinical skills, and expose you to new skills as a safe and effective Physiotheraist. The interactive, practical approach includes high fidelity simulation within the Clinical Skills Centre, developing your professional skills for physiotherapy intervention and the decision-making processes supporting this. Formative assessment will comprise the completion of an e-Skills Portfolio that documents the deliberate practice and development of skills introduced within the module.

The module summative assessment provides you with the opportunity to complete a written piece of work that evidences your research-rich learning relevant to clinical practice and your ability to make informed decisions working with people with complex needs.
