EF0308 - Speaking Skills (ESF)

What will I learn on this module?

This module will focus on developing your speaking skills through seminar discussion, similar to what you will experience on your target academic degree programme in the UK. During these seminars, your tutors will help you to gain confidence in discussing your thoughts and opinions in class, develop your communicative competence in the English language, as well as learning strategies for communicating interculturally.

How will I learn on this module?

The learning and teaching approaches on this module will mirror the experience you will expect to have on your target degree programme. In class, your tutors will help you to develop the skills you will need to participate and engage in discussing content in UK seminars, through building your communicative ability in English using specially designed tasks and by raising awareness of relevant English phrases and intercultural strategies that can be used to participate in seminar activities.
The module will also help you to develop your presentation skills individually and in groups. These skills will help you to gain the tools you need to present once you are on your chosen degree programme.

How will I be supported academically on this module?

All materials to help you prepare will be available on the eLP site.
Additionally, lectures will be recorded via Panopto and made available on the eLP for you to listen to again.
You will have access to Language Labs and Pronounce pronunciation software to improve your listening and speaking skills.

How will I be assessed?

Your speaking grade will be based on continuous speaking assessment, which includes assessing your active participation in in-class discussion, presentations, and your communicative ability in English across all of your modules.

Module abstract

This module is designed for international students coming from various educational backgrounds. Whatever your previous academic experiences, in order to succeed on your UK degree programme you will need a high level of proficiency in spoken English (equivalent to IELTS 6.0 or above depending on your target degree programme) in order to engage and learn, as well as strategies to communicate interculturally.
