PP7001 - Module 2: Your Work Context as a Site of Research

You will undertake independent, directed and collaborative enquiry on this module through a diverse set of teaching and learning approaches and methods. You will utilise the University e-learning platform to participate, document and collaborate with peers, tutors and agreed external experts, and you will be committed to a broad range of independent reading. Given that the module focuses on critical perspective change, you will be supported to engage with methods to model and critique your practice and work context.

A key part of enquiry on this module will be in the form of appreciative, reflective and constructively critical small group discussions in which you will contribute in an appropriate, safe and confidential environment. The e-Learning site will provide you with a rich and diverse online learning environment with relevant content and tools relevant to the module, including a dynamic online reading list. Your module tutor(s) will support you using a coaching style, and will work with you to establish a respectful, supporting and challenging relationship focused on meeting the module objectives.

Intellectual / Professional skills & abilities:
IPSA1. To be able to demonstrate philosophically/theoretically informed ‘perspective taking’ (i.e. articulate multiple alternative characterisations) of your own prospective practice-research context.
IPSA2. To evaluate the practical implications for your own proposed research that follow from the application of one of these perspectives to your own practice-research context.

Personal Values Attributes (Global / Cultural awareness, Ethics, Curiosity) (PVA):
PVA1. To demonstrate awareness of, and insight into, the personal and organisational ethical requirements that follow a critical consideration of your work context as potential site for research.

Formative Assessment:
Formative assessment will take the form of a collaborative “perspective taking” and feedback activity in which you will utilise a particular philosophical or theoretical perspective to both describe your peers’ practice context(s), and receive alternative descriptions of your own context from others.

Feedback will be verbal by both tutor and peers.

Summative Assessment:
Poster presentation of a critical evaluation of your own work context as prospective site of research, utilising philisophical or theoretical resources to:
• characterise its specific opportunities and challenges in relation to your prospective study.
• Present your (philosophically or theoretically informed) rationale for justifying the purpose, and value of your prospective study.

In this module, you will develop a philosophically and theoretically informed characterisation of your practice/work context as a site for your potential research. Through independent study, group work, formative and summative assessment, you will engage with new and critical perspectives, using these to expand and enrich your appreciation of the opportunities and challenges of your work context as a research site. In the light of insights you gain through the module, you will present a potential approach to engaging in dialogue and negotiation with your work context with your prospective research proposal in mind.
