What will I learn on this module?
You will learn about the theories and practices that inform the steering of projects for the delivery of benefits and how they enable you to respond to the challenges of managing organisational change initiatives.
The module integrates several topics under each of the competencies within relevant Project Management Bodies of Knowledge: Contextual, Behavioural and Technical.
You will learn to:
• ensure that benefits are understood and pursued through reliable decision-making
• promote effective identification of risks and opportunities throughout the life-cycle of projects
• enable processes that capture and assess potential changes to project scope
• Identify and customise governance frameworks that successfully integrate stakeholders behaviours and expectations
• Recognise the Interpersonal skills required to motivate and coordinate people to achieve specified objectives throughout the change process.
How will I learn on this module?
You will learn through a combination of engaging interactive methodologies and teaching approaches including; lectures*, small group seminars**, and engagement in technologically- enhanced learning (TEL).
This module will encourage active engagement in all of the topic areas and enable you to reflect and critically evaluate its theoretical content compared with its practical application. There will be an opportunity to be involved in peer learning through seminar workshops and an online discussion board facility is available on the elp to help developing your skills as a reflexive independent learner.
*Lectures and seminars will be used to support effective transmission of information and will be delivered via a combination of face-to-face ‘live’ sessions lectures held in university classrooms, and the use of digitally pre-recorded sessions or live video webcasts. All ‘live’ lecture sessions will be captured using Northumbria University approved teaching platforms (currently the Panopto video platform: https://www.panopto.com/) and hosted on the eLearning Portal (ELP) with materials being made available after delivery on campus.
This content will remain available throughout the programme.
**For distance learning students equivalent seminar materials will be provided to facilitate learning.
How will I be supported academically on this module?
Your learning will also be facilitated through a combination of tutor guided independent learning activities (e.g. directed reading), and your own independent learning activities. The fundamental principles of the learning and teaching strategy of the on-site delivery of this module are replicated during the distance delivery of this module. Additional support mechanisms will be utilized to provide specific and focused student guidance and support. These will include: online guidance sessions; access to one-to-one academic guidance sessions by telephone or skype and interactive asynchronous online peer support forums.

What will I be expected to achieve?
Knowledge & Understanding:
1. Evaluate the impact of client requirements, scope and external stakeholders upon value and risk management decisions in the project process
Intellectual / Professional skills & abilities:
2. Analyse the overall facets of project value and evaluate approaches to value management that are applicable to project management.
3. Critically analyse and apply appropriate techniques to understand the key drivers for change.
4. Develop and evaluate governance frameworks and their ability to deliver strategic objectives within project orientated organisations
Personal Values Attributes (Global / Cultural awareness, Ethics, Curiosity) (PVA):

How will I be assessed?
The assessment allows you the opportunity to confront the challenges of managing an organisational change initiative project.
Assessment will consist of two related tasks.
Task 1 is the development of a strategic project plan based on the project information given. This will include making strategic project decisions prior to participating in a web-based interactive project simulation. The impact of these decisions will be evaluated during this process. (MLO 1, 2, 3, 4)
Task 2 is an individual critical review of the strategic plan developed in task 1 developed in a business report format (MLO 1, 2, 4, 5)
Formative feedback on the assessment will be provided at the end of a simulation exercise.
Other formative feedback on specific tools and techniques will be provided weekly in the seminars.

Module abstract
It is essential that a project manager is fully equipped with the necessary knowledge and tools to be able to face any events that may impact on a project’s products, resources, stages or objectives. This module will enable you to effectively manage the inevitable risks and uncertainty that projects deliver and the multi-faceted challenges that come about as a result of change.
As part of this module you will experience the practicalities of managing these issues through a simulation that has been developed with input from industry, client experts and academia. You will be able to test the strategies that you have learnt and see the complexities that develop from their implementation.
