What will I learn on this module?

The module will build upon the concepts and theories presented to you during your prior taught modules. It will require you to develop, consolidate, and apply your independent research, academic study, and rproject management skills to the investigation of a topic of your own choice (designed in collaboration with any project partnering company or institution) that is relevant to your programme of study. You will undertake analytical and evaluative research that will result in the production of a dissertation.

How will I learn on this module?

A member of academic staff will guide you during the execution of your research project and while you write your dissertation. This will be done in collaboration with any mentor appointed to support you in any project partnering company or institution. Additionally, the member of academic staff will monitor your compliance with the University’s research ethics and governance policies and procedures, compliance with the University’s health, safety, and well-being policies and procedures, and your adherence to the University’s codes of practice to safeguard the confidential nature of the data you collect. This includes ensuring you have received research ethics approval following your engagement with the University’s Research Ethics Online tool. You must gain research ethics approval before you collect any data; this is a mandatory University requirement.

How will I be supported academically on this module?

Academic staff will provide guidance, 1-2-1 support as appropriate and may r use interactive asynchronous online peer support forums on the University’s virtual learning environment (VLE) to support you in your studies. Academic staff will use guided independent learning activities, e.g., directed reading. You will supplement this structured support with independent learning activities. You will further supplement this structured support by engaging with any requirements to provide regular progress updates, by way of (for example) updating research logbooks, or uploading written progress to online evidence files.

What will I be expected to achieve?

Knowledge & Understanding:
1. Critically evaluate analyse and synthesise advanced professional/academic knowledge including discipline relevant theory/concepts, on an independent research project at the forefront of the project management field

2. Critically justify and apply appropriate research methodology and practice on the independent research project

Intellectual / Professional Skills & Abilities:
3. Apply project management skills to identify, plan and execute the disciplinary-relevant research project including a clear, logical programme of empirical research, data collection and analysis.

4. Originate a written research project in an academically acceptable format, to disseminate its results and effectively communicate how it is theoretically, methodologically, and empirically linked, identifying also what its limitations were alongside possibilities for further research.

Personal Values Attributes (Global / Cultural awareness, Ethics, Curiosity) (PVA):
5. Independently create a contribution to professional practice and the project management knowledge domain through a project that demonstrates characteristics such as originality, critical thinking and problem solving.

6. Address any project relevant professional, ethical, legal, sustainability and/or social concerns in a manner befitting of an academic research environment.

How will I be assessed?

Formative Assessment
Academic staff on the module will assess you in a formative manner to help build your confidence and highlight any misunderstandings you may have of the theoretical, professional, and research design concepts used in the module. Formative feedback will be given to you throughout the process. This will be digitally, by academic supervisors and facilitated by the University’s VLE, and verbally by academic staff, and possible industry mentors, during formally-scheduled supervision sessions with these individuals. Such formative feedback aims to help you learn and prepare for the submission of your summative assessment.

Additionally, verbal feedback may be offered by academic staff and industry mentors in any discussions of project progress and/or results. This can further help the development of your academic and professional skills.

Summative Assessment
There are Pass/Fail components associated with attaining Mandatory University Approvals, and the presentation of project results. Thereafter, aAcademic staff on the module will summatively assess your written dissertation. This will evaluate your ability to satisfy all the module’s learning outcomes. You will use the University’s VLE to submit the dissertation. Academic staff on the module will use digital feedback tools to issue your feedback.





Module abstract

The module enables you to use and extend the Project Management knowledge and skills you have acquired thus far as a postgraduate student to undertake a research project. Doing this will, in turn further develop your future academic and professional practice. Using an appropriate research methodology and associated research methods for the collection and analysis of data, you will critically synthesise a body of knowledge relevant to your programme of study to investigate an approved, professionally relevant, and project management related topic of your choice. Upon successful completion, you will be able to demonstrate an ability to conduct research and organize the findings into a comprehensive formal original research publication that may inform the future direction of professional project management practice. You may also demonstrate professional engagement if partnering with a relevant company or institution, from the design of your project through to completion. This will require you to critically evaluate your contribution to current knowledge and understanding of your chosen topic area, especially if designed in collaboration with any project partnering company or institution. You will be allocated an academic supervisor who will provide appropriate guidance and support throughout the module while encouraging learner autonomy. You may also be supported by a mentor from any project partnering company or institution.
