PY0768 - Research Experience: Implementation and Dissemination

What will I learn on this module?

This module will build on skills developed in PY0767(Research Experience: Design and Development) in order to allow you to carry out your planned research and to disseminate the results. Normally it is expected that you will continue to work on the project developed alongside the research team in PY0767 (Research Experience: Design and Development). As you implement that research study you will contribute to the creation of new knowledge and practical applications and also personally reflect on the ways in which empirical research can be applied to inform theory, policy and practice. You will develop the capacity to work autonomously and collaboratively to achieve successful research outcomes.

How will I learn on this module?

You will independently undertake research in line with the plans formulated in PY0767 (Research Experience: Design and Development). You will participate in research meetings with your research supervisor(s) in order to discuss your data collection, analysis strategies and interpretation. You will continue to engage with practical and applied aspects of research as necessary for your study. These may include but are not limited to: maintaining relevant contacts and networks for recruitment; collecting data, and undertaking any necessary data analysis training. Learning will take place in one-one sessions with supervisors as well as in a group context during research meetings and presentations. Analysis, interpretation and dissemination skills will develop through engagement with research team members including academics, research staff and PhD students. Attendance at research group meetings will give you further opportunities to learn about the wider context of your research and to explore issues of data analysis and dissemination. Your participation in research group meetings will offer the opportunity for feedback on your data collection, analysis and interpretation.

How will I be supported academically on this module?

Resources will be available via the e-learning portal including assessment information. Discussion boards will be used to support general research issues and current information will be presented to help you to explore a range of potential employment pathways, PhD opportunities and further study options.

You will be encouraged to keep a research logbook in which you can record relevant notes, research findings, protocol issues, and feedback on discussions with the rest of your research team as well as your personal reflections on these. Your entries can form the basis of supervision meetings, act as a reminder and assist with design and planning, as well as enhance your employability options.

How will I be assessed?

Formative assessment:
The research team will provide feedback during supervision meetings and where appropriate during group research meetings.

Summative assessment:
The module assessment will comprise of two parts:

Part 1 – 50%:
Oral presentation
IPSA1, IPSA2, PVA1

Part 2 – 50%:
Journal article (4000 words)
K&U1, K&U2, IPSA1,
To disseminate the results of the research study.

Individual written feedback will be provided for both assessments.

Module abstract

The aim of this module is to provide you with an opportunity to undertake an independent piece of psychological research and to communicate the findings of the study with a range of audiences including supervisors and peers. You will have the chance to work with state of art facilities in a research rich environment as part of a team interacting with academics, research staff and PhD students in order to gain an in-depth understanding of the research environment and carry out a piece of your own research. The module will enable you to implement your research plans, collect and analyse data and then disseminate your findings in a variety of ways including informal research meetings, conference presentations and journal papers.
