What will I learn on this module?

The module aims to develop your understanding of the role of coaching within the sport development industry and to provide you with the skills to deliver safe and effective coaching sessions. The module will develop students’ awareness of the requirements of planning and delivery of coaching and will encourage students to become reflective practioners.
A key aim of the module is to ensure you are capable of actually delivering coaching sessions within a sport development context. Therefore, the L2 Doorstep Sport Coaching Award developed by StreetGames, with support from sports coach UK, and accredited by 1st4sport is embedded within this module- this will provide you with a combined award covering Level 2 Principles and Preparation for Coaching Sport and Level 2 Award in Multi-Skill Development; this industry recognised qualification is tutored and assessed as part of the module.

By the end of this module you should be able to:
1. Evaluate the role of coaching within a sport development context;
2. Show awareness of the fundamental skills of effective coaching in sport and the ability to plan and deliver a multi-skills coaching session;
3. Demonstrate the knowledge and ability to complete a level 2 sport coaching qualification;
4. Demonstrate the ability to reflect on personal coaching progress and potential.
5. Show an awareness of ethical issues relating to safe coaching practice and develop an understanding of the value of coaching in individual and group environments.

How will I learn on this module?

The learning on this module will include lectures and seminars where you will enagage with the theoretical foundations of ocahcing practice for sport development contexts and will develop your understanding of the role of the coach and your own personal coaching philosophy. In addition a large proportion of the teaching on this module will take place in a practical environment where you will learn through observing coaching practice and implementing your own coaching delivery. The module also requires you to complete the level 2 coaching award and this will be delivered by tutors from the StreetGames organisation who will teach you in a mixture of practical and workshop based settings.

How will I be supported academically on this module?

Staff teaching on this module will be available for individualised, pre-booked meetings at specified times for students. During these meetings students will have the opportunity to gain support for (but not limited to) module content, feedback relating to formative and summative assessments as well as general enquiries and issues specific to the module.

Additionally students will have access to a Discussion Board (found on the eLP for this module) where enquiries and issues relating to the module can be raised with module staff and student peers providing the necessary support across a general forum.

What will I be expected to achieve?

Knowledge & Understanding:
1. Evaluate the role of coaching within a sport development context;
2. Show awareness of the fundamental skills of effective coaching in sport;
3. Demonstrate knowledge of how to to plan and deliver a multi-skills coaching session.

Intellectual / Professional skills & abilities:
4. Demonstrate the ability to complete an industry recognised level 2 sport coaching qualification and reflect on personal coaching progress and potential.

Personal Values Attributes (Global / Cultural awareness, Ethics, Curiosity) (PVA):
5. Show an awareness of ethical issues relating to safe coaching practice and develop an understanding of the value of coaching in individual and group environments.

How will I be assessed?

· Summative Assessment:
This module contains two assessments:
1. Essay (1000 words) which assesses module learning outcomes 1 & 5.
2. Practical Coaching Session which
assesses module learning outcomes 2,3 4 & 5.

· Formative Assessment:
Formative assessment will be provided to students on an individual and group basis throughout practical workshops, seminars and tutorials giving the opportunity for the student to self-reflect on progress. Students will have an opportunity to practice their coaching skills and will gain formative assessment from peers, university tutors and the StreetGames course tutors throughout their coaching practice.
Formal feedback will be provided on assessed work and on-going feedback will be given by university and course tutors as the students complete the Level 2 qualification to help ensure successful completion of the qualification. Students will also be encouraged to engage with self-reflection on their own coaching practice and progress.

Module abstract

This module aims to develop your understanding of the role of coaching within the sport development industry and to provide you with the skills to deliver safe and effective coaching sessions. The module takes advantage of the excellent sport facilities that the University has and much of the teaching will take place within these facilities.

An exciting element of the module is the inclusion of the L2 Doorstep Sport Coaching Award developed by StreetGames, with support from sports coach UK, and accredited by 1st4sport which is embedded within this module. This will provide you with the opportunity to complete a combined award covering Level 2 Principles and Preparation for Coaching Sport and Level 2 Award in Multi-Skill Development; and this industry recognised qualification is tutored and assessed as part of the module. Completion of this award will allow you to lead coaching sessions in all sport development environment and therefore is hugely valuable in terms of your employability.
