What will I learn on this module?

On this module you will learn about the functions and processes central to contemporary Sport Development. You will also learn about how sport is structured, governed, funded and managed within the UK today. The module incorporates elements of sport management to help you to explore the current sport development practice.
Key topics you will cover include:
- What is sport development and how is it defined?
- How is sport structured in the UK?
- Who governs sport in the UK?
- What are the current agendas and policies influencing UK sport?
- What are the key processes used by sport organisations to manage sport development?

How will I learn on this module?

When studying this module the learning will largely take place through lectures and seminars; during which you will be engaged in a variety of tasks working individually and in groups. There will be opportunities to access documents and information taken from current practice and case studies will be used to highlight the relevant of the academic concepts in practice. The module also includes a number of workshops where you will work with other students to complete extended tasks with only limited staff input. In addition small groups tutorials will be provided to help address any queries you have with the module content and to help you prepare for the assessments.

How will I be supported academically on this module?

Staff teaching on this module will be available for individualised, pre-booked meetings at specified times for students. During these meetings students will have the opportunity to gain support for (but not limited to) module content, feedback relating to formative and summative assessments as well as general enquiries and issues specific to the module.

Additionally students will have access to a Discussion Board (found on the eLP for this module) where enquiries and issues relating to the module can be raised with module staff and student peers providing the necessary support across a general forum.

What will I be expected to achieve?

Knowledge & Understanding:
1. Explain the role and meaning of sport development in the current context of sport in the UK.
2. Develop an understanding of the management techniques used within effective sport development organisations.

Intellectual / Professional skills & abilities:
3. Use current research and evidence from practice to develop understanding of sport development.

Personal Values Attributes (Global / Cultural awareness, Ethics, Curiosity) (PVA):
4. Develop awareness of ethical and moral issues relevant to current sport development practice.

How will I be assessed?

Summative Assessment:
1. Essay (2000 words) which assesses module learning outcomes 1,2, 3, and 4

Formative Assessment:
In seminars you will be given the opportunity to develop your written skills and you receive both tutor and peer feedback on the tasks you complete. This will help you in the completion of the summative assessment.

Module abstract

On this module you will learn about the functions and processes central to contemporary Sport Development. You will also learn about how sport is structured, governed, funded and managed within the UK today. The module incorporates elements of sport management to help you to explore the current sport development practice. Using case studies and examples taken from current practice, the module will help to bring to life your understanding of sport development and broaden your knowledge of how Sport Development operates in practice. Workshops will allow you to test out your new knowledge through applied tasks relevant to the industry.
