SP7021 - Research in Practice

The taught content will be delivered and provided in a variety of formats, and you will be able to access materials on the eLP. Under the supervisor guidance, you will also be involved in the day to day running of a study; collecting the data and analysing particular data sets or analysing data that has already been collected. You will be able to call on the support and guidance of an individual supervisor and meet regularly with during the initial weeks of the module, and later as is appropriate to the stage of study. The seminar and lecture content will further guide your progress and inform how to appraise your skills, collect evidence of and reflect on your involvement in the research project.

Module information, assessment requirements and expectations, and important module announcements will be made through the eLP. Material to support your learning will be uploaded in advance of sessions. You will be provided with content verbally and guided through tasks during timetabled sessions. A dedicated assessment session will afford you the opportunity to ask assessment related questions in class.
At the beginning of the second semester you will be met by the module leader who will provide an overview of the projects which are available to work on. You will be asked to indicate your top three choices and where possible we will place students with their preferred choice. When you have been allocated a project to work on you will be encouraged to meet with your supervisor to agree on a plan for your involvement in the project. Thereafter, you will be encouraged to meet regularly with the supervisor and other members of the research team.
The Module Leader is there to support you with any queries that you may have about the module content, and all staff members provide tutorial time outside of class time. Module tutors will provide you with the necessary information on how to arrange a tutorial. There is also further academic skills support available from the University Library services.

Summative assessment will comprise a max 3500-word portfolio (to address all module learning outcomes) that includes a needs analysis, evidence of your contribution to the research project and a self-reflection on your personal development during and contribution to the research project.

Formative assessment will take place on a weekly basis in meetings with your research supervisor and team.

Summative Feedback
You will receive written or audio feedback on your summative assessment to help you identify areas of strength and areas for development. There will be the opportunity to discuss your feedback with a member of staff during a tutorial.

This module provides you with the opportunity to participate in a research project within one of the research groups present in the Department, to appraise your own skills and training needs in relation to the project, and to reflect of your contribution and involvement. The primary intention is that you are given a ‘hands-on’ experience in the skills that underpin scientific research in exercise science. The module can be thought of as a mini apprenticeship providing experience of the entire research process in practice.
