SP7022 - SER MRes PG Project

For the majority of this module you will partake in independent study, with hours allocated for practical laboratory work in the form of data collection and analysis. A small number of lectures, in combination with group seminars and individual tutorials are provided to help you during the completion of your research project. You will be introduced to the project within the first semester of study during your final year; this will enable you to consider potential topic areas alongside your studies.

Module information, assessment requirements and expectations, and important module announcements will be made through the eLP. Material to support your learning will be uploaded in advance of sessions. At the beginning of the second semester you will be allocated a dissertation supervisor on the basis of an initial proposal idea and timetable that you are directed to complete. A research methods tutor will also be available for help and guidance. Your supervisor will be an appropriate member of staff from the Department of Sport, Exercise, and Rehabilitation (DSER). Individual one-to-one tutorials with these tutors during the second and third semesters will be used to support you in the development and progress of your project, whilst group tutorials may be used to facilitate discussion between all students and enable peer support. E-mail communication will supplement these tutorials, according to your needs.

Knowledge & Understanding:
1. Critically analyse the literature pertaining to a research area of their choice providing rationale for their research project.
2. Design and manage an extended empirical study that is ethical and is related to a topic of their choice.


Intellectual / Professional skills & abilities:
3. Collect, analyse and critically interpret the resulting data appropriately.
4. Write up your work in the form of a journal paper consolidating the above and adopting a concise writing style.
5. Present and defend your work in a conference-style presentation.

6. Collect data for your investigation whilst always adhering to ethical standards and maintain professional standards within the laboratory environment.

Summative assessment on the module comprises:

Component 1: 5000 word write up of your work in the style of a submission-ready journal article manuscript (70%) (KU 1, 2; IPA 3, 4; PVA 6)

Component 2: Max 30 min conference-style oral presentation and defence of your completed project (30%). (IPA 5).

Formative Feedback
You will receive ongoing formative feedback in one-to-one tutorials with your allocated supervisor for the duration of the module.

Summative Feedback
You will receive written or audio feedback on your summative assessment to help you identify areas of strength and areas for development. There will be the opportunity to discuss your feedback with a member of staff during a tutorial.

This module provides the opportunity for an independent study in an area of relevance to exercise science. Students are expected to use skills and knowledge acquired in modules as the basis for an in depth investigation of specific issues in the discipline. The purpose of this module is to develop the student’s knowledge and understanding of an aspect of practice in the vocational area, and to develop skills in communication, critical thinking and independent enquiry.
