What will I learn on this module?

You will learn a systematic process of answering questions about sport and exercise science and the value of this process in the study of sport and exercise science.You will learn how to identify, justify and pursue a proposed question / problem within the sport and exercise science sub disciplines. You will also learn basic techniques of collecting and handling / analysing data produced from experiments in sport and exercise science.

How will I learn on this module?

You will learn about the scientific method and the basic concepts of collecting, organising and analysing sport-and-exercise-science-related data with basic statistical methods through lectures, practical data collection sessions, data-analysis workshops and independent study. In You will learn how to perform basic statistical tests in Excel in practical-computer-lab workshops, directed tasks and independent study. You will also be introduced to methods of working with data from interviews and focus groups comprising the qualitative method of enquiry.

How will I be supported academically on this module?

During the first week, you will be introduced to the module, and its’ administrative procedures and assessment requirements.

Support materials for sessions will be available on the eLP; including the lecture slides, essential-weekly reading and other useful resources such as discussion boards. For further support on taught sessions you can access module tutors for one-to-one discussions and tutorials via the online tutorial booking system.

Formative preparation for the exam will take place in practical data-analysis workshops where you will be able to practise your data handling and analysis skills and receive feedback from tutors. There will also be a mock exam session to familiarise you with the demands of the actual semester exam. Dedicated assessment sessions will afford you the opportunity to ask any exam-related questions.

Written feedback will be provided for the summative assessment and correct exam answers will be provided on the eLP to cross-reference any errors.

You will receive formative feedback on practical workshop tasks, and will have the opportunity to discuss any concerns you may have with the module tutor.

Knowledge & Understanding:
On successful completion of the module you will be able to:

1. describe the systematic process of the scientific method and its application to quantitative and qualitative problems
2. demonstrate a basic understanding of experimental design
3. demonstrate a theoretical understanding of basic statistical techniques

Intellectual / Professional skills & abilities:
On successful completion of the module you will be able to:
1. independently identify different types of research problems relevant to sport and exercise science and conduct and interpret analysis of related data

Personal Values Attributes (Global / Cultural awareness, Ethics, Curiosity) (PVA):
On successful completion of the module you will be able to:
1. demonstrate a basic understanding or ethical principles as they relate to research conducted on human participants

How will I be assessed?

Formative assessment will take place on a weekly basis in practical data-analysis workshops.

Formal (summative) assessment will comprise an end-of-module examination. The exam are comprises MCQ and short answer sections.
The exam will assess:

• A basic understanding of the scientific method
• An appreciation of experimental design at a basic level
• The ability to calculate basic statistics using a calculator
• Ability to independently identify different types of research problem
• Application of computer-based statistical analysis
• An awareness of ethical considerations in research

All module LOs will be assessed.

Module abstract

In this module, you will learn how to apply the systematic-scientific method to address basic problems of relevance to the sport and exercise sciences using basic experimental approaches and basic data analysis techniques.
