SP3003 - Sport in the Headlines

What will I learn on this module?

This module is designed to provide you with the knowledge and understanding of how sport is portrayed in the media. You will consider the relationships between the media and sports stakeholders as well as the impact of sports reporting on modern society. You will examine the various forms of media communication in the sports arena and will discuss how different sports have embraced technology as a means of communication. You will focus your studies on various aspects of sport and will be introduced to theories linked to current examples of how sport is reported in the media. You will be assessed by a presentation and blog, both of which will allow you to explain and explore media issues in sport.

How will I learn on this module?

You will learn via a combination of group sessions (lectures), small group sessions (seminars) and independent/tutor guided independent learning. The module has a one-hour weekly lecture where we will consider the various media sources and how sport is portrayed within these. There will be a focus on theories surrounding sport and the media. There will be two one-hour seminars per week, which will be facilitated by group tasks, team working, communication and interpersonal skills and will allow you to reflect on your learning. The seminars will draw heavily on discussions of media case studies and consideration of wider perspectives on issues that will develop your thinking skills.
Use of the e-learning portal will be essential, as this will support the work you will be undertaking in the lectures and seminars, it will also contain additional exercises that will allow you to undertake further practice independently.

How will I be supported academically on this module?

The module teaching team will provide you with support in both lectures and seminars. You will be able to access teaching materials online via the ELP to help you to prepare for sessions. This site also contains the reading list for the module, a discussion board where you can ask questions and other supportive teaching materials.
The seminars will provide you with weekly opportunities for direct and interactive formative feedback on you your progress and understanding. You will be able to engage in small group discussions with peers and you will be able to ask questions regarding the assessment during this time. Formative assessment may take place in the form of question and answer sessions, small group tasks or presentations. Staff are also available outside of formal teaching sessions for one to one support; staff contact details are made available to you on the ELP and you can usually book tutorials online with staff.

LO2 – Display developing reflection skills through exploring sport media related issues

How will I be assessed?

You will be assessed by a written blog that focusses on four sport stories, how they have been reported and their implications for those working in the sport industry (100%, LO 1, 2, 3).

Formative assessment and feedback on blogs will be provided. The blog can be built up over time in seminars and workshops, and you will have the opportunity to have feedback on your progress.

The feedback on the assessment will be provided through a rubric with a key strength and weakness highlighted in summary text on the ELP site blackboard.





Module abstract

We are constantly reminded of sport through various media outlets, be these “traditional” outlets such as newspapers and television or more modern outlets such as social media. Sport is therefore in the headlines a great deal.
It is important for sport practitioners working in sport to have an awareness of the reciprocal relationship between sport and the media and how this relationship has changed and developed. This module will help you to understand the role of the media in the coverage of sport and the associated wider implications. It will also develop your awareness of how sport impacts on the media and how this may have changed over time. You will develop a sound understanding of contemporary media issues in sport within this module.
