What will I learn on this module?

You will learn about the key management theories and principles relevant to the sport industry. You will be introduced to the core concepts, functions and principles of management, which will help you develop an understanding of the sport management discipline. You will be introduced to such topics as leadership, resource management, organisational theory and behaviour, marketing, facility and event management. You will also learn about how the various theoretical concepts are inter-related and how knowledge of such areas will help make you an effective sports manager.

How will I learn on this module?

You will learn through lectures, workshops, and independent learning. The lectures will cover theories and concepts that will enable you to tackle a series of guided exercises. You will work on these during seminar sessions to apply theory to practice and to gain a greater understanding of how to become an effective sport manager. You will undertake practice in developing your management, communication and presentation skills, whilst receiving tutor feedback on your progress.

How will I be supported academically on this module?

Support will include feedback from tutors during lectures, small-group seminars and tutorials. In addition tutors will respond to questions via the module’s discussion board on the University’s eLearning Portal (eLP) so that the whole group can benefit. Module tutors will use online resources and the eLP to provide support materials. Prior to the summative assessment module staff will deliver an assessment briefing session, and there will be opportunity to undertake some mock exam questions.

How will I be assessed?

Formative assessment:

Formal lectures will introduce you to key concepts, which will then be applied within seminars. You will work in groups in the seminars and practice your management, communication and presentation skills to complete specific tasks using real life scenarios. Feedback will be given both on the content and presentation performance. This will assist students in preparing for the assessment. Additionally, to support your learning for the assessment, at the beginning of each lecture session, the tutor will recap the main learning outcomes of the previous session and also ensure student learning by asking key questions. This will enable you to develop your understanding of the principles of sport management.

Summative assessment 1:

Exam (2 hours) to demonstrate an understanding of all the key concepts that have been introduced in the module including leadership, resource management, organisational theory and behaviour, marketing, facility and event
management. (100%). MLOs 1, 2, 3 & 4.
Feedback will be provided on the script, along with the mark. General feedback to the cohort will be provided via the eLP site.

Module abstract

What is sport management? What do sport managers do? Why are some sport organisations so successful, while others are not? ‘Principles of Sport Management’ aims to provide you with an understanding of the key management theories and principles relevant to the sport industry. The module introduces the core concepts, functions and environments of sport management, and develops students' understanding of this discipline through the application of management theory to practice via contemporary sport themes and case studies. Working with experienced teachers in the field of sport management, you will encounter interactive and “fun” teaching styles that help aid your learning and understanding. You will be taught all about the key skills, roles and competences that are needed in today’s sport industry, such insights will then help give you that “cutting edge” when you apply for that dream sport job.
The content of the module will be research-informed and applied and the assessment will reflect this focussing on key functions within sport management and the various career opportunities that are involved within the subject discipline.
