What will I learn on this module?

Exercise and physical activity are important to health and the prevention and treatment of many chronic health conditions. In this module you will explore the role of exercise as a medicine. You will critically appraise the role of exercise in prevention, treatment and/or management of health conditions and how exercise complements traditional medical prescription.

How will I learn on this module?

An interactive style of teaching incorporating lectures, seminars and laboratory sessions is implemented. Lectures provide the basic conceptual framework and core material for syllabus topics. Seminars and associated directed learning tasks enable more in depth discussion of current research in the field, including contemporary issues. Seminar sessions incorporate the use of problem-based case studies to generate group discussion, and to enable you to develop both critical thinking and creative problem solving skills. In particular you will gain insight into the complexities of exercise as medicine. You are encouraged to engage in independent study, in particular the reading of current journal articles, in order to further their knowledge base and develop critical thinking.

How will I be supported academically on this module?

During the first week, you will be introduced to the module, and its’ administrative procedures and assessment requirements.
Support materials for sessions will be available to you on BlackBoard; including the lecture slides, suggested reading, access to interactive digital resources and websites, and other useful resources such as discussion boards and invitations to attend lectures by guest speakers. For further support on taught sessions you can access the tutors for one-to-one discussions and tutorials via the online tutorial booking system.
Formative preparation for the assessment will take place in student led seminars where you will be able to practise your skills in critiquing journal articles and receive feedback from your peers and tutors. Dedicated assessment sessions will afford you the opportunity to ask assignment related questions.
Written feedback will be provided for both summative assessments. A generic feedback session will take place for the assessment, and generic feedback from previous years will also be made available on BlackBoard.
You will receive formative and summative feedback on submitted work, and will have the opportunity to discuss any concerns you may have with the module tutor.
There is also comprehensive help available in the university library on a wide range of generic academic topics such as: academic writing, statistics, report writing, referencing, and how to hone your presentation skills

How will I be assessed?

Two online multiple choice tests will evaluate your knowledge and understanding of the material covered in the lectures, seminars, labs and assigned reading. The first test will evaluate weeks 1-6 and the second text will evaluate weeks 7-12.. (IPSA2; KU1-2 30% - 15% each)
? A 1500-word case study will evaluate your ability to succinctly and clearly present a patient-related report. Within the report you will describe the application of risk stratification; the selection and justification of the most appropriate assessment test; interpretation of results; formulation of an apposite exercise programme; and evaluation of the effectiveness of the programme. (IPSA1-2; KU1-2; PVA1 70%)

Module abstract

Exercise and physical activity are important to health and the prevention and treatment of many chronic health conditions. This module explores the role of exercise as a medicine. Students will critically appraise the role of exercise in prevention, treatment and/or management of health conditions and how exercise complements traditional medical prescription.
The assessments for this module require you to 1) complete two online multiple choice assessments on the topic areas covered in the taught sessions and recommended reading and 2) write a case study detailing an exercise management protocol for a chronic health condition. The teaching is carried out by staff who are experts in their respective fields, with strong research backgrounds in clinical exercise physiology. Learning about very global health/disease issues will provide you with an excellent foundation for working in the field of clinical exercise physiology.
