What will I learn on this module?

In “High Performance Coaching in Strength & Conditioning” you will study the long-term planning process in strength and conditioning, and the “art and science” of effective coaching delivery. Through study on the module you will learn about the history of periodization and long-term planning, the approaches coaches can take to planning training for athletic performance enhancement, and how to critically analyse and apply evidence to deal with the challenges faced by S&C coaches in the long-term planning process. You will also study how your behaviour as a coach impacts on the acquisition of skill and the prevailing motivational climate of your own practise, and critically reflect on your own coaching behaviour with the aim of improving how you interact with your athletes.

How will I learn on this module?

You will study the science underpinning effective coaching delivery in strength and conditioning, from planning and programming at a “macro” level (annual planning, approaches to programming, exercise selection) down to the delivery of strength and conditioning activities at a “micro” level (planning individual sessions and units, coaching behaviour). During all topics you will be challenged to incorporate evidence from research and practice, and reflect on your philosophy of coaching and support. The module will be delivered via a combination of whole class teaching, tutor and student-led seminars, practical activities and pre-taught session online material. Timetabled sessions will be prefaced by combinations of required pre-reading, pre-listening (podcasts) and online tutor-led material. The practical activities will require you to record and reflect on your own coaching practice, and will be repeated on the module to enable you to reflect on the material under study and contextualise its’ application to your coaching practice. A range of sessions delivered by current practitioners outlining their own personal approach to planning and delivering strength and conditioning will provide “real life” examples of the content under study. The online webfolio assessment will require you to critically analyse your own approach to planning, programming and delivering strength and conditioning activities, and challenge you to self-reflect on the efficacy of your approach and your development as a strength and conditioning coach.

How will I be supported academically on this module?

A range of pre-topic reading podcasts and online tutor-led material will be provided via the e-learning portal. for each week of study. You will receive written formative feedback on draft sections of your webfolio, to be used to feedforward into your final summative assessment. Additional formative feedback will be provided on an ongoing basis in classroom and practical sessions by module tutors. Dedicated assessment support sessions will be scheduled to prepare you for the assessment tasks.

How will I be assessed?

Webfolio: Critical analysis and reflection on strength and conditioning practice (100% weighting, 4000 words maximum, K&U 1,2,3, IPSA 1, PVA 1)

The assessment requires you to develop on online webfolio. The purpose of this webfolio is to for you to critically analyse, evidence and reflect on your approach to planning, programming and delivering strength and conditioning activities, and your individual philosophy of support.

You will be afforded the opportunity to submit draft work; formative written feedback on how to improve this work for the final summative assessment will be provided. This process will also aid your critical self-reflections. It is anticipated the webfolio will provide a valuable resource for you to evidence and demonstrate your approach to strength and conditioning, and will engage you with the process of critical self-reflection and analysis of practice in order to support your continued development as a strength and conditioning coach.

The module teaching team will be responsible for guiding you in your pursuit of knowledge; providing formative feedback, additional reading and questioning to promote your engagement with the topics under study. The teaching team will provide a range of pre-session materials each week, including readings from academic and applied sources, podcasts and online lecture material, which you will be expected to engage with and reflect on prior to teaching sessions. In portions of the module you will be expected to drive your learning by answering questions set by the module team, and you will be required to share your new knowledge with your peers. Verbal feedback and direction on the depth and criticality of your interactions with the topic under study will be provided by the module teaching team. Summative general and specific feedback will be provided on your final assessment submission .

On “High Performance Coaching in S&C” you will learn how to critically apply principles of long-term planning to optimise the athletic enhancement process, and how to apply evidence from the science of behaviour and learning to improve your practise as an S&C coach.
