Are there any distance learning programmes available at Northumbria

Yes, we offer a number of Distance Learning programme. You can view these on our Course Search by selecting Distance Learning in the Mode of Study option.

Entry Criteria and English Language

Can I apply with work experience

We will consider applications that have significant and relevant work experience.  We recommend that you supply an up to date CV detailing your work experience, alongside your applications.

Do you accept EU and international qualifications

Northumbria regularly welcomes a large number of EU and International applicants.

We also accept a wide range of EU and International English Language qualifications and exemptions. They can be found here.

What English Language tests do you accept

Northumbria recognises a wide range of English Language Tests and exemptions in lieu of GCSE/IELTS.  You can find details of the tests that we currently accept, here. For certain courses we may only be able to consider certain tests to meet UKVI requirements if you require a visa or if their are professional body requirements.

Applicants for Pre-sessional English Programmes

Does Northumbria offer online Pre Sessional English?

Yes we are offering online pre-sessional through our virtual learning environment.  There is an 11 week option in June and a 6 week option in July.  The course you will require will depend your current level of English and how much you need to improve to reach your target degree.


Can I apply to pre-sessional without a SELT/UKVI IELTS?

Yes, as you do not need a visa to study online you therefore do not need a SELT for online pre-sessional.  Please note, if your target programme following the pre-sessional requires a SELT you may still need one for that depending on the current UKVI guidance. Our team of experts will work with you throughout the pre-sessional to ensure you have all the up to date information you need to join your target programme.    


How will the online presessional courses be delivered

The courses will be delivered through our electronic learning platform, Blackboard, and will be a mixture of live teaching, guided learning and tests.


What are the entry requirements for the online pre-sessional English?

The online Pre-sessional English and Study Skills for Summer entry are as follows:

11 Week June Pre sessional:  You must be a maximum of one overall IELTS (or equivalent) under your degree programme entry requirements

 

6 Week July Pre Sessional:  You must be a maximum of 0.5 overall IELTS (or equivalent) under your degree programme entry requirements


Which English language qualifications are accepted for entry onto the course?

Our acceptable english tests can be found here Due to the current situation Northumbria is expanding the number of tests that we recognise as evidence. We are currently accepting TOEFL Home Edition and from mid-May we will be accepting IELTS Indicator.  We also recognise Duolingo as evidence for entry onto our online/distance learning programmes. 


What is the deadline for summer school applications?

Applications should be received by :

11 Week June Pre sessional – 28 May 2021

6 Week July Pre Sessional – 30 June 2021

 


Will there be an summer school induction?

Yes, there will be an online induction programme, which will introduce you to the course and to the academic team. This will also cover how the course will be delivered and how you will access learning materials. It is important that you attend these inductions to really ensure you are prepared before the teaching begins. Induction information will be provided in advance of the start of the programme to applicants who have accepted their offer.


Will I need any specialist equipment for the online Pre sessional?

To get the best out of this programme we recommend that you have access to a laptop or PC and also a good stable internet connection. In addition headphones may also be beneficial.


How many hours will i need to study on the programme and what is the timetable

The programme is full-time and sessions are timetabled between 9am-1pm (UK time), Mon-Fri with breaks. During this time, you will receive a total of 14-16 in-class contact hours per week, and a weekly one-to-one meeting with a tutor to discuss your progress. The sessions are scheduled between 9am-1pm to best accommodate international time differences for our students. You will also be expected to complete work outside of class.

How will i be assessed on the online summer school programme

Students will be assessed in listening and reading using end-of-semester online examinations. Writing will be assessed using an online writing exam, as well as submission of an essay with which your tutors will provide ongoing support and feedback. Speaking will be monitored and assessment throughout the programme. The final examinations will take place in weeks 10 and 11 of the programme (11 week course) and weeks 5 and 6 of the programme (6 week course)
