Moving away to university is one of the biggest and most exciting steps you’ll take. It's important to think about where you will be living, especially during your first year at university. So, make sure you check out all the accommodation options. A good way to do this is through applicant visit days. This will also give you the chance to ask student helpers which accommodation they lived in and what they thought of it.

Questions you might want to ask include: Do you want to live in halls or flats? Mixed or single-sex? Catered or self-catering? How far away are the accommodations? Would you need to take public transport? If so, how easy is it to get around and how much will you need to budget for that? What percentage of first year students are guaranteed university accommodation? Taking a closer look at what your chosen universities offer may provide you with some indication of which of your five you would prefer.

Self -selection

At Northumbria University we want to ensure that YOU shape your student experience from start to finish. That’s why our new accommodation application system allows you to choose exactly where you would like to live - from choosing your building, flat and even the exact room.

We offer a wide range of accommodation to suit all tastes and budgets, including catered halls, self-catering flats and individual studios, both on- and off-campus. We guarantee accommodation to 100% of our first year students. We’re constantly investing in our accommodation, opening several new student residences in the last few years, totalling nearly £40m.
