This is your Careers and Employment Service, we want you to be able to manage your future career successfully whichever path you choose to take.  We do so by helping you to research your options, enable you to make well informed career decisions, be able to identify and articulate your skills and to find relevant employment, further study or training. We strive to do so to a high standard and are accredited to the national Customer Service excellence standard.

We need to know how we are doing, and also for you to tell us your ideas - what is working, what isn't working so that we can continue to strive to offer a quality service.

Ways to have your say

Your comments, ideas and suggestions help to shape the Careers and Employment Service. You can help us to keep improving our service to you by using the following methods:

Online Your Say comment form
A quick and easy way to have your say. Tell us what you like about the service, or tell us what we could do better.

Comments and suggestions cards
Pick up a card and post the completed form in our comments and suggestions box in Student Central.

Surveys and satisfaction cards
We will regularly seek your feedback on aspects of the service. Please help us to continue improving our service by taking the time to complete our surveys and satisfaction cards. Cards can be posted in the comments and suggestions box.

In-person
All Careers and Employment staff are happy to receive your comments face-to-face.

Feedback gathered at key events
We will use a variety of methods including feedback walls and surveys to get your feedback on our fairs and events.

Your representatives
We hold regular meetings with key stakeholders such as Students' Union Sabbatical Officers.

Our promise to you

  1. We will provide you with the opportunity for face to face or telephone discussion with a professionally qualified Careers Adviser within 1 working day of initial enquiry through the Careers Drop-in.

    We achieved a 100% provision of our Guidance Drop-in service during 2016/17
    .
  2. We will provide you with the opportunity for face to face discussion with a Careers Information professional twice a week at advertised times through the Careers Pit Stop.

    We achieved a 100% provision of our Information and Jobsearch Drop-in service at advertised times in 2016/17.

  3. We will provide you with a minimum of 40 careers education presentations and workshops (Career Insights) during the academic year; covering a range of occupations and employment sectors.

    We provided 50 sessions in 2016/17 plus a 'Get Graduate Job Ready' event. 

  4. We will provide access to the JobsOnline vacancy database, offering opportunities for graduates and students seeking graduate, part-time, vacation jobs, placements, work experience and volunteering opportunities, which will be available 99.5% of the time, 24/7 and 365 days per year.

    JobsOnline was available to search for vacancies and employers 99.9% of the time from January to December 2017.

  5. In the current academic year we will facilitate opportunities on campus for a minimum of 225 employers to meet with Northumbria students and graduates at careers fairs and events to raise awareness and knowledge of the labour market and recruitment practices. This includes a cross sector careers fair open to students of any discipline and a Part-time Jobs Fair for current students. 

    From August 1st to end December 2017, 244 unique employers have attended events on campus. This includes two careers & recruitment fairs. Further opportunities for Northumbria students and graduates to meet employers face to face at presentations, informal drop-ins and participate in skills workshops are planned for the spring term in 2018.

  6. We will provide you with the opportunity to email the Careers and Employment Service mailbox with a careers-related query and receive a response within 2 working days.

    We test response times at intervals throughout the year. During 2016/17, 100% of emails received a response within 2 working days in the test periods.

You said, we did

You asked us to increase the frequency of our Information and Job Search Drop-ins.

From the beginning October 2017, we have increased the number of drop-ins from twice a week, to a daily drop-in service each day Monday to Friday.

You asked for more help with CVs including a greater variety of templates.

We developed an online employability hub, Careers Online, which includes a CV builder with a number of templates to choose from. In addition, we have added a growing number of CV examples for different sectors.

Final Year Society Joint Honours students asked for a workshop on Preparing for Teacher Training Interviews,

A session on Teacher Training Interviews was organised and delivered in November 2017 at Coach Lane Campus.

You asked for more help preparing for interviews.

Our online employability hub, Careers Online, contains an interactive interview simulator, which you can use to practice your interview technique wherever you are.

You said you would like more employers from a greater variety of sectors at the Northumbria Placements and Careers Fair.

In November 2017 we organised and ran our biggest ever fair, a multi-sector event over a 2-days with more employers than ever. 

We recognised that some disabled students would welcome an opportunity to increase their confidence by meeting employers and learning about their disability and diversity work in advance of the Fair.

We ran a Pre-Fair Disability Confident Workshop before each day of the fair which gave you an opportunity to meet leading employers, get top tips on the questions you should ask, information about disclosure and to learn more about their disability and diversity work.
