Start-up Hatchery

Student and Graduate Enterprise can provide free office space in our Business Start-up Hatchery. The space will include free ICT, telephone access and other facilities such as free access to meeting rooms. Businesses within the Hatchery can also take advantage of our free enterprise mentoring activities carried out by specialist industry business mentors.

How it works

Hatch1Student and Graduate Enterprise acts as the ‘landlord’ for the Hatchery ‘tenant businesses’ and ensures appropriate conditions of work. Businesses intending to use Hatchery space must be able to clearly demonstrate:

  • The product or service is viable
  • Customers and markets have been considered
  • Practicalities of business idea have been considered
  • Personal commitment

Hatchery space is available in 6 month periods. Once in the Hatchery, businesses will be expected to show milestones of progress.

General conditions for using the Hatchery

An agreement will be drawn up between Student and Graduate Enterprise on behalf of Northumbria University and the representative of a potential start up business from Northumbria University for access to hatchery space within the University. The tenancy is subject entirely to conditions laid down and altered from time to time by the Enterprise Manager at Student and Graduate Enterprise.

Continuation of the Tenancy will depend upon evidence of progress towards realisation of the business through the business plan. This will include:

  •  Responsible and ethical behaviour in the conduct of the business.
  •  Active realisation of business activities including business plan preparation and product and market investigation.
  • Maintenance of legality and adherence to all University rules and requirements
  • Participation of all hatchery tenants as students of Northumbria University.

Tenancy will normally be for no more than one calendar year. Progress assessment will occur at least at 6 monthly intervals. Evidence of satisfactory progress is entirely at the discretion of the Enterprise Manager at Student and Graduate Enterprise.

The interpretation of all aspects of this agreement will be at the sole discretion of the Enterprise Manager of Student and Graduate Enterprise. The decision of any issues relating to the agreement between the signatory school and Student and Graduate Enterprise will be made at the sole discretion of the Enterprise Manager.
