Student Reviews

Our Student Inclusion Review scheme offers an opportunity to reflect on the inclusivity of practice within faculties and services across the University.

The idea is simple but effective - staff will submit a review for an area of practice they would like to be considered. They will then be matched with a Student Inclusion Consultant who has lived experience, or a strong understanding, of the barriers that our underrepresented students may face whilst studying at University.

Reviews can be requested by any academic or professional services staff member who feels they would benefit from objective student input into a review of practice. The scheme is fully inclusive, with staff of any grade being welcome to submit a review request.

The scheme would act in a similar way to a peer observation scheme where the Student Inclusion Consultants would form a team with staff members and act as a critical friend intending to empower and enhance practice, where possible, as well as identifying and celebrating good practice.

Reviews cannot be based on the delivery of teaching but can include elements of pedagogy. Examples could include:

  • teaching materials within a module to ensure accessibility

  • diversity of module reading lists

  • impact of policy on a specific group, e.g. student parents

  • marketing materials to ensure diverse approaches to recruitment for a specific course/activity

  • level of engagement in a specific activity for a particular group and how this may be improved

Once a review request has been submitted, the Student Inclusion Team will organise an initial meeting with the staff member to discuss the process and timeline.

The Student Inclusion Consultants will then select the reviews they feel they are most able to contribute to and the Student Inclusion Team will then organise an introduction between staff and students.
