Discussing his clearing experience he said: “I found the clearing process really positive and simple. All I had to do was call the hotline and I was accepted on to my course. The member of staff I spoke to was incredibly supportive and friendly throughout the entire process.”

Kieran has enjoyed the transition from A-level to his degree. Talking about his course he said: “Every day I am in university I am learning something which interests me. At A-Level I didn’t feel like I was always engaged in my subjects as it was what I had to do rather than what I wanted to do. I love programming and when I’m not practicing, I am learning how to write programming in theory.

I get to work in the new CIS building which is open 24/7 for Computer Science students. All of the computers there support the programmes we use on the course which means there is always a place to study.

Kieran has found the teaching staff on his course very supportive and easy to chat to. He said: “My favourite part about studying at Northumbria is definitely the lecturers. Having lecturers which specialise in your course is great because you get to have fun and interesting conversations with people who have done research in their subject area. I am also encouraged to gain work experience wherever possible.

“In the third year of my degree I will be given the option to complete a placement year which means I can gain knowledge and employability skills in a specific area of the industry which I enjoy”.

Talking about his time at Northumbria University to date, Kieran explains how he has also been involved in societies and competitions throughout his studies: “My student experience at Northumbria so far has been really good. I joined the Video Game Society in my first year and took the role as head secretary. We run events at the Student Union who are really good at helping you plan and often give out grants to make it happen. Our last convention was in February, for which we won two awards for hosting the best event at the Northumbria University and National Student Union awards.

I have also had the chance to partake in the Nissan challenge. Nissan selected students from universities across the North East to compete in computer science related challenges and my team came second.”

Reflecting on his clearing experience, Kieran said: “My advice to future students considering going through clearing would be to just do it! Clearing isn’t a bad thing. It’s much simpler and less complicated than people may think. I love my course and I’m so happy clearing gave me the opportunity to pursue the industry I’m interested in”.
