Northumbria was Imogen’s first choice university for studying Business Management, but with her predicted grades not meeting the course requirements she initially didn’t secure a place.

However, after working hard she managed to achieve the grades required and was offered a place at Northumbria through adjustment using the Clearing process.

Imogen's Story

While studying for her A-levels, Imogen knew she wanted to complete a business related degree as it was the subject she most enjoyed. Keen to explore the subject area of marketing, but reluctant to narrow her field, Imogen found that a Business Management degree would be most suited to her.

From Imogen’s first visit to Newcastle she knew that Northumbria offered her everything she was looking for from her student experience – so much so that she made the university her first choice in her UCAS selection.

Imogen said: “Northumbria catered for my every need and visiting Newcastle instantly filled me with excitement. The only thing that stood in my way was that I didn’t have the predicted grades required to get onto the Business Management course, and when I initially applied, I didn’t get a place.”

It was at this point that Imogen was made aware of the Clearing process through her Business Studies teacher. Before she knew that adjustment was an option, Imogen would have had to accept a position on a similar course at her second choice university in the North West – one that she didn’t have her heart set on. With a renewed outlook and undeterred by her initial knock back, Imogen decided to get her head down, concentrate on her studies and commit to gaining the best possible grades she could achieve.

Imogen said: “On the day I received my A Level results, to learn that I’d achieved two B’s and a C, the grades required to get into Northumbria University to study Business Management, was a huge surprise and also a huge relief! I was so happy and it felt like a massive achievement. It was reassuring to know that I still had the chance to study at my first choice university.

“I contacted Northumbria’s clearing hotline immediately to discuss Business course availability and was given a brief interview and invited to attend the university to meet with the module leader.

“I accepted her invite and on visiting Newcastle Business School at Northumbria was offered a place on the Business Management course.

“Prior to going through the confirmation and clearing process I had no idea there was such a thing as adjustment and what it could do for a student’s prospects.

“It was a really easy process and because I was aware of how it worked before I received my results I was able to prepare. That meant I felt confident on the day that, should I achieve the grades required, I still stood a good chance of getting into Northumbria.”

When asked what advice she would give students who might find themselves going through the Clearing process this year, Imogen said: “Whether you’ve done better than expected, or worse, don’t panic. It’s not the end of the world – just be as prepared as you possibly can.

“Explore all of your options and make sure that the course and university are the right fit for you. Make yourself fully aware of the course that you want to study, including key details that you might be asked about should you get a telephone interview. Show enthusiasm and passion for your subject area – personality goes a long way!

“Now that I’m fully aware of the Clearing process I can’t say enough good things about it. University is such a crucial part of your life and it’s important that you make the right decision. If you’ve decided which subject you want to study and found the right university – one that will offer you good value for money, a great student experience and employment prospects – then I would definitely advise considering looking into Clearing. It could open doors for you that have an impact on the rest of your life!”

For Imogen, a key attraction to Northumbria was its central location within the vibrant city of Newcastle. Imogen added: “I’ve never even had to use public transport here, whereas other universities I initially considered were quite spread out across the town or city.

“The Newcastle Business School is such a fantastic, modern facility and frequently tops the list of league tables in terms of where’s best to study a Business degree.

“Throughout my time at Northumbria the opportunities on the Business Management course have been second-to-none. In my third year I chose to undertake a study abroad placement in South Korea – an opportunity I never would have had if I’d studied elsewhere. Living in Asia for a year was without a doubt a highlight of my student experience and has even given me a second degree from a Korean university.

“In my fourth year I was given the chance to carry out a consultancy project, working with a real life client to complete a marketing brief and setting up a campaign that the client has now begun to implement. It was a great way to demonstrate my practical skills and has given me a more accurate perception of the world of work that I’m now about to enter.

“Now that I’ve come to the end of my degree I’m looking forward to beginning my career that will hopefully take me into advertising. I’m positive about what the future holds and know that my degree from Northumbria has set me ahead of the competition in the job market and firmly on the path to success!”
