Matthew Cartwright

Matthew originally was unsure about going to university, however later in the year decided this was the best option for him and therefore applied to Northumbria through Clearing.

Reflecting on his experience he said: “I took a gap year because I wasn’t sure what I wanted to do and I didn’t want to make a decision that I would later regret and go to a university I hadn’t thought out properly. I then decided that Computer Science at Northumbria seemed an attractive option and decided that the clearing process was a good idea.”

“I knew a fair bit about clearing as I had spoken to my teachers and friend’s about the process.” Matthew continued: “I was anxious but I was able to do it all in one phone call. In fact I did it on the bus! I got on the bus having never interacted with Northumbria before and I got off the bus having been offered a place.”

Matthew is confident he made the right decision coming to Northumbria, enjoying both his course and living in the city of Newcastle. He said: “My favourite part about studying at Northumbria is the location. It’s a very friendly city and there is a lot to do here.

“My course allows us to access the new CIS building which is filled with computers fitted with all of the programmes we need. There are 24 hour facilities we can use which means there is always somewhere you can go to access a specific programme.

“Northumbria has helped me to progress on my career path as I have received help from my tutors who I feel confident to speak to about future prospects and opportunities after my degree.” Commenting on his time at Northumbria he said: “My student experience has been very good. I am currently a part of the games society and the LGBT society. My advice to other students would be to definitely consider applying through the clearing process. It’s surprisingly easy!”

Northumbria University has a limited number of places available for high quality students through Clearing this summer. For more information, visit or call the Clearing Hotline on 0800 085 1085.
