UCAS Adjustment

If you're confirmed with your first choice institution when your results are published, then congratulations!

UCAS Adjustment allows you the opportunity, if you've met/exceeded the terms of your conditional firm offer and have been accepted on that course, to look for a different course at a different institution while still holding your confirmed place.

This is a chance for you to reconsider where and what you want to study while protecting your unconditional firm choice for a certain period of time, so if you register for Adjustment but don't find anything, you'll still keep the course you gained on results day.

If you achieved at least 320 UCAS points from your best three qualifications you could qualify for a scholarship of up to £4,000 at Northumbria University - find out more about studying with us.

How do I know if I'm eligible for Adjustment?

There are strict regulations surrounding who can register for Adjustment.

To be eligible for Adjustment:

  • Your results must have met and exceeded the conditions of your conditional firm (CF) choice
  • You need to have paid the full application fee.

If you have paid the single choice application fee and wish to use Adjustment, you must pay an additional fee, and will need to do this through your UCAS Track account.

You are not eligible to use Adjustment if:

  • You are confirmed (UF) at your firm choice but did not meet the conditions of the offer
  • You have a confirmed place on a changed course offer
  • Your original offer was unconditional

You cannot adjust your insurance choice.

When is Adjustment available?

Adjustment is available from Thursday 18 August 2016 and ends on Wednesday 31 August 2016. Your adjustment period begins when your conditional firm (CF) choice, changes to unconditional firm (UF). This may be Thursday 18 August 2016, or it may be later. You then have a maximum of 5 calendar days from the date that you achieve the conditions of your first choice offer to register and secure a place through Adjustment.

Remember – Adjustment ends on Wednesday 31 August 2016. If you become eligible on 28 August, you will only have three days to use the process and secure another place.

You can find out when you become eligible for Adjustment, and when your Adjustment period ends, by viewing the details on your UCAS Track page.

If you do not find a suitable place elsewhere within the required period, your Adjustment choice will expire and you remain accepted at your original choice.

How do I know if Adjustment is right for me?

Adjustment is entirely optional, and you don't have to try and find an alternative place if you don't want to. Remember, when you made your original application you probably did loads of research into why you wanted to go to that university or college. You probably attended an Open Day, met the staff who teach on the course, viewed the accommodation, and weighed up the financial options before making your final decision. That decision may still be as valid for you today as when you first made it. Just because you may be eligible for Adjustment, doesn't mean it's the right option for you.

You will need to think carefully about whether you will be able to secure accommodation, and what bursary or scholarship support there may be at the university or college you are interested in.

If you are interested in a place at Northumbria you'll be eligible for our Academic Scholarship scheme if you have gained certain qualifications. Click here for a full list of eligible qualifications.

It's possible the university or college you are interested in won't have any vacancies on the course you want to be considered for. You might want to check official vacancy listings in the press, university websites or UCAS before you make your final decision.

Remember, you must also meet eligibility criteria for Adjustment (the university or college you are interested in will check this). Examples of exceeding and not exceeding your offer can be found here, together with helpful videos about the Adjustment process.

If you need advice, your careers adviser at school or college may be able to help you to decide if Adjustment is a suitable option for you, or you can contact the Admissions Office at Northumbria on +44 (0)800 085 1085, or email

How do I register for Adjustment?

Once you’ve weighed up the options, if you decide Adjustment is the right thing for you, you must register to find an alternative course so universities and colleges can view your application.

You can do this by viewing your UCAS Track page, where you will find a ‘Register for Adjustment’ button. This will only be displayed for applicants who have been confirmed (ie your status has changed to UF) in their original choice of course.

Remember – you are only eligible if you have met and exceeded the conditions of your CF choice, and it will be up to the universities and colleges you approach to verify this.

To use Adjustment:

  • Register in Track by clicking on ‘Register for Adjustment’ in your ‘choices’ screen
  • Contact a university or college to find if they have another place
  • The university or college will check that you exceed the conditions of your unconditional firm choice
  • The institution will tell you if they can offer you a place, and you must tell them if you want to accept it
  • If you are accepted through Adjustment, your Track screen will be updated and you will receive a confirmation letter from UCAS.
