The staff at Newcastle Business School could be described as very international. A lecture might be given in the morning by a Chinese professor, whilst in the following afternoon, a seminar is provided by a professor who is originally from India. Facilities including equipment

Northumbria University in Newcastle has a big campus to accommodate all its students and personnel. Newcastle Business School is located in the eastern part of campus and therefore called City Campus East. There is a logical division in place in which teaching is organised. When entering the building at the left-wing, there is a restaurant available in which hot meals, sandwiches and other refreshments could be purchased. Also, there is a Starbucks present, which is convenient to grab a coffee in between teaching. Then, at the right-wing on the ground floor, Ask4help is located who can help a student when they need help in any matter. All main lecture halls are present on the ground floor, these rooms are used for the main teaching.

On the second and fourth floor, there are smaller classrooms that serve for seminars up to thirty students. Also, in the middle of these rooms, lots of space is available for students to study individually or in a group setting. For example, when students need to meet in groups, there are big screens available that could be used for group discussions. In addition, there are numerous computers available that enable students to study on their own.

All computers in Newcastle Business School are equipped with the latest software that is needed by students to complete their assessments. Simultaneously, it allows students to practice skills that are taught during seminars. Computers work rapidly, and therefore barely issues are encountered.

Career services are available a few times a week in which students could drop in to get 1-1 feedback on cover letters and or CV’s.

 

The Business Clinic*

One of the advantages of studying at Northumbria University is that students could decide to write a traditional dissertation or take part in the Business Clinic in their final semester. The Business Clinic is an initiative that was founded a number of years ago by Newcastle Business School. Being part of the Business Clinic is that students develop hands-on skills that they could use in their professional careers. For example, essential soft skills such as collaboration and communication are developed. Especially for students who aspire a career in consultancy, it is a good exercise that adds much value to their resume.

Mostly, small-medium enterprises collaborate with the Business Clinic to seek innovative insights for students. However, well known national brands, such as Greggs, have also worked with the Business Clinic. Students who get accepted to the Business Clinic are linked to an organization which requires close collaboration to clearly identify the organization’s issue and provide adequate recommendations. The Business Clinic deals with a variety of topics which are, but not limited to Human Resource, Strategic Marketing reviews, Brand Audits, Digital Marketing and Social Media, Logistics, Strategic Market Expansion and Finances. In other words, all aspects of business are covered by the Business Clinic.

It is interesting to note that not all organizations that work with the Business Clinic are profit-orientated. As it applies to the areas of consultancy, the type of organizations varies to a large extent too. The Business Clinic has worked with Social Enterprises, educational organisations, voluntary organizations etc.

Other activities that are closely linked to the business world*

Additional academic events are organized by Newcastle Business School to stimulate interaction between students and businesses. An example of such events is guest lectures in which business professionals talk about their expertise. Also, career days are organized in which a wide variety of companies (for instance, EY, JD Sports) are interested in talking to students for graduate schemes and or placement opportunities.

Also, efforts and resources are allocated to remain in close contact with alumni. An event in which alumni take a crucial role is Newcastle Business School Marketing Reunion. During such an event, graduates are back at Newcastle Business School for a day to share their experiences and expertise with current students. On average, such a day consists of lectures that are concluded by a social in which students could network with graduates. Such events are often linked to a division of business: for example marketing.

 

Accreditations

Newcastle Business School received accreditation from the longest existing accrediting body for business schools called AACSB Accreditation. It is a recognition that is associated with excellence education. A small proportion of the business schools that are internationally present hold an AACSB Accreditation. As a student, it is an important aspect to consider as it confirms that Newcastle Business School is a good business school to study at. Due to its secured quality of teaching, the employment rate after graduation is perceived to be high.

The previous could be confirmed by the fact that Newcastle Business School was selected as the best business school in the United Kingdom in 2015 by Times Higher Education. The price was awarded due to its modern business education. Also, the high quality of education, high employment rate after graduation, and close partnerships with corporates have played an essential role.

 

Sustainability

Due to climate change and other natural developments, organizations are concerned with sustainability. Many organizations aim at reducing their ecological footprint in order to minimize natural damage as much as possible. Newcastle Business School realized the importance of sustainability and therefore incorporated this in its modules to adequately prepare students to conduct business in a sustainable manner.

To be more precise, topics on corporate responsibility, ethics and sustainability are crucial drivers that are integrated into modules offered by Newcastle Business School. In fact, sustainability takes a central role in any module. To guarantee sustainability in its business school, efforts were taken to become a member of the United Nations Principles of Responsible Management Education (abbreviated as PRME).
