This post is part of an externally funded project by the Ministry of Defence (RAF). Northern Engineering Solutions (NESL) is working in collaboration with Northumbria University to combine their experience in tailored bioremediation techniques to design a bioreactor system able to break down waste into usable by-products (NESL will provide the bioreactor, Northumbria University will supply the microbial consortia). The post holder will use a high-throughput array approach to develop an optimum generic core microbial consortium, applicable to a diverse range of chemical substrates from a wide range of environmental conditions and potential locations. The engineering prototype will be tested with the consortia as the laboratory stages are completed to optimise treatment performance and enhance the recyclability potential of the by-products, the prototype will include a three-stage algal bioreactor system for enhanced carbon capture.
