Applications are invited for a three-year postdoctoral research position in ice-sheet and ocean modelling, funded as a part of the UK/US joint International Thwaites Glacier Collaboration.

The project will focus on improving the representation of several key processes in numerical ice-flow models such as calving and damage evolution, determining the relative importance of different types of external drivers, and make predictions of the future ice loss from the area using ice-ocean models. There is scope for both theoretical work and new numerical implementations of physical processes such as calving, damages, and other processes relevant to the near-future evolution of Thwaites glacier and the stability of the West Antarctic Ice Sheet.

The successful candidate will be part of the multi-disciplinary research theme ‘Extreme Environments’ and will be based in the Department of Geography & Environmental Sciences at Northumbria University, Newcastle, UK. The candidate will work with Professor G. Hilmar Gudmundsson.  The project is a part of a large US/UK collaboration project involving several institute and researchers, and the candidate will have the opportunity to work and interact with other research groups both within the UK and in the US. 

The successful candidate will have a PhD in either physics or mathematics, or in a related discipline such as glaciology, oceanography or geophysics. Experience in numerical modelling of either ice-flow or ocean circulation is desirable. The post will commence 1st December, 2019.
