Northumbria University is delighted to have recently become an approved provider to conduct the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) Test of Competence. We are one of five test centres based around the UK. The Test Centres provide Part Two of the NMC’s Test of Competence for international nurses and midwives seeking registration with the NMC and for those nurses and midwives looking to renew their registration after a career break. Part Two is a nursing or midwifery Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE) which simulates a clinical environment and various‘patient’ scenarios which are likely to be encountered by registered nurses and midwives. Candidates are expected to utilise a modern evidence base and effectively demonstrate safe practical application of nursing and midwifery skills. The Test of Competence is blueprinted against the current UK pre-registration standards which are available on the NMC’s website.

Northumbria is busy developing the new test centre on our Coach Lane Campus, a short distance outside Newcastle City Centre, and we are looking to open for business around the Spring 2022.

We have a number of opportunities in development to support the running and operation of the test centre and examinations and are now in a position to offer our first roles on a three-year fixed term contract:

As Head of the NMC Competence Test Centre you will provide the principal leadership and management of the Competence Test Centre (CTC) to ensure the effective and efficient running of the of the assessment in line with the University and NMC requirements and governance processes. This will include co-ordinating the development,delivery, performance, monitoring and review of the centre against clearly defined targets set by the University and NMC, including budgetary, and monitor and evaluate across the range of centre activities. You will also lead on the planning, delivery, monitoring and management of the assessment process; candidate experience; potential research and innovation, and knowledge exchange opportunities, working collaboratively with the NMC Business Development Manager and NMC Test Centre Manager to achieve all aspects of the NMC contract to ensure performance targets are met.

You will have a strong focus and commercial sensitivity and acumen as well as high levels of analytical and problem-solving capabilities to produce innovative solutions. The successful candidate will demonstrate current knowledge and understanding of current developments related to the NMC Test of Competence and experience of building successful, cooperative, and collaborative relationships and partnerships, be able to influence and persuade others, and work to tight deadlines.

Our team has a blended approach which includes remote and on campus working.  The frequency with which colleagues will work on campus will depend on the role and the needs of the University.  Some colleagues work on campus 5 days a week and others perhaps 2 or 3 days.
