Career Path: Senior Corporate Governance Adviser, CIPD

I initially studied languages at Durham University but didn't want to be teacher or interpreter, so chose to study a law conversion course at Northumbria. Following this, I applied for training contracts and obtained one in London.  I worked this law firm for four years in London and Moscow, but then moved into public policy where I worked for the trade associations, fund manager and regulator in London and Brussels. 

What are you doing now?

I am based in Brussels, advising on public policy and ESG. 

What was it about Northumbria that made you decide to study here?

Was at university in Durham and loved North East so looked for law course nearby.

What was it like studying at Northumbria?

Great fun - student life lively, some interesting lecturers, good location.

How did studying at Northumbria help you achieve your career goals/give your career an edge?

Taught me about law and enabled me to get into City law firm from which rest developed.

What was the best thing about your course?

Friends and support. Good lecturers. 

Which skills/knowledge did you learn on your course that you use most now throughout your career?

Analysis of connections and responsibility. Difference between law and ethics. Importance of understanding who your client really is! 

What did you enjoy most about your time at Northumbria University?

Meeting other people, intellectual stimulation and debate.

What advice would you give somebody who is thinking of studying at Northumbria?

Go for it. You will enjoy it.

How would you describe your time at Northumbria in three words?

Enjoyable, lively and invigorating.
