Chief People Officer

As Chief People Officer, Jane Embley leads the University’s activities in relation to the recruitment, employment and development of staff.  Jane provides support and advice to the Vice-Chancellor and the Senior Management team on all employment-related matters.

Jane is responsible for the development and implementation of the University’s HR Strategic Plan which underpins our Corporate Strategy.  She is responsible for leading the implementation of the University's Organisational Culture Programme.  Working with colleagues across all Faculties and Services Jane is coordinating and supporting a number of work streams which are designed to enhance staff satisfaction and engagement.  In addition the work aims to provide greater opportunities for colleagues to contribute to University initiatives and developments.  

On behalf of the University Executive, Jane is leading a project to bring the majority of the University’s Services together in one location while adopting modern working practices and utilising technology. 

Jane joined Northumbria University in April 2008 and was previously Director of Human Resources at the University of Sunderland.  She joined the University of Sunderland as Assistant Director in 2000 before becoming Director in 2004.  Earlier in her career, Jane worked in HR roles at Bucks New University and the Open University.

Jane was Vice-Chair of UHR, the national association for HR professionals in Higher Education, from 2009 – 2013 and has contributed to a number of national working groups.  She studied at Newcastle University, has an MA in Human Resource Management, is a chartered member of the CIPD and a trained mediator.
