At Northumbria University’s School of Communities and Education, we bring together experts in education, childhood and early years, social work, occupational therapy, public health and psychological training with the aim of improving lifelong health and wellbeing, in our region and beyond.

We’re driven by compassion and a commitment to social justice. Our work supports people of all ages to thrive, not just survive – helping individuals and communities reach their full potential. Through education, research, and partnership, we are dedicated to fighting for a kinder, fairer world.

HANDS-ON LEARNING EXPERIENCE

Our multi-professional community sets us apart. Students from different disciplines learn side-by-side in shared modules and simulation-based environments that reflect real-world multi-agency practice – preparing them for the challenges and opportunities they’ll face in the workplace. Here learning means doing, with many courses offering placements and projects to prepare our students for professional careers within education, health and social care.

STRONG PARTNERSHIPS, REAL-WORLD IMPACT

Our partnerships are central to our impact. We work with local authorities, NHS trusts, schools, and national bodies including Social Work England, the Department for Education, the European Teacher Education Network, the Royal College of Occupational Therapists, and the British Psychological Society. These connections enhance employability and provide students with exceptional placement opportunities and a strong professional network.

We’re committed to widening access and unlocking potential. Our inclusive teaching practices, foundation routes, and strong pastoral support mean we welcome learners from all backgrounds and life stages.

RESEARCH THAT MAKES A DIFFERENCE

Our research shapes policy, transforms practice, and improves lives. We’re helping to tackle the biggest challenges from child hunger and exploitation to wellbeing, addiction, trauma, mental health, ageing communities and palliative and end of life care. From the North East to the wider world, we’re proud to be making real impact in health, education and social care.

ACCREDITATION

We’ve built strong relationships with a number of professional and regulatory bodies who accredit many of our courses. This helps keep our course content current and in line with industry standards.

At Northumbria, you won’t just get a degree – you’ll be equipped to lead change, make a difference, and help build a better future.
