Supporting the UN Sustainable Development Goals

Our University Strategy states our commitment to optimising our contribution to the UN Sustainable Development Goals through our research, teaching, campus and operations. We are a signatory of the SDG Accord and we continue to develop our portfolio of sustainability initiatives. Our Environmental Sustainability Policy considers the impact our activities have on the wider environment and aims to minimise this impact. View the latest Annual Sustainability Report.

Our sustainability journey to date has seen some excellent results. Northumbria has recently been named 4th most sustainable University in the UK in the 2019 People & Planet University League. We have been Green Gown Awards finalists for 3 years and are currently nominated for two awards in the 'Benefitting Society' and 'Campus of the Future' categories. Our carbon emissions have been reduced by over 30% against a 2005/06 baseline and are on track to achieve a 40% reduction by 2020. We have an ISO 14001 certified Environmental Management System and have obtained the Platinum EcoCampus Award.
