Environmental Sustainability

As a large organisation our operations have a substantial local, national and global environmental impact.

Environmental Sustainability is of key importance at Northumbria University with a commitment to deliver significant improvements in sustainability.

This commitment is reflected in our achievement of the Silver EcoCampus Award for our Environmental Management System, covering all activities at our Newcastle campuses, as we move towards ISO 140001 accreditation. Northumbria University is proud to be 42nd in the People & Planet University Green League and to be a Fairtrade accredited university.

You can read our Annual Sustainability Report for 2017 here.

Our Environmental Sustainability Policy is reviewed annually and agreed by the University Sustainability Management Group.

We also consider the environmental and social impacts of our direct investments. Our Treasury Management and Ethical investment Policy makes the commitment that we do not and will not directly invest in fossil fuel companies, arms companies, tobacco companies, alcohol companies and companies complicit in the violation of international law. Further details of our commitment can be found in our Ethical Investment Declaration.
