Amelia Swaby: Balancing Practice and Study as a Level 7 Architect Degree Apprentice
Amelia Swaby is a dedicated Level 7 Architect Degree Apprentice at P+HS Architects, currently in her third year of a four-year programme at Northumbria University. Her journey exemplifies how the apprenticeship route can seamlessly blend academic learning with real-world experience, offering a dynamic path to professional qualification. In this case study, Amelia shares her motivations for choosing the apprenticeship, her learning experience, and the invaluable benefits she’s gained from balancing work and study — all while being supported by her university and practice.
Why did you want to undertake this Apprenticeship?
After gaining my undergraduate degree, I found a fantastic practice and enjoyed the working environment. When looking into my options for postgraduate education, I didn’t want to leave the practice to go back and study full-time, so the apprenticeship route seemed like the perfect fit for me.
What is the learning experience like for you?
I work 4 days a week in the office and get 1 day per week dedicated to studying. With living close by, I am able to attend face-to-face sessions at the university and make use of the state-of-the-art studio spaces, however I do still have the opportunity to work remotely. The ability to do both offers a lot of flexibility which is great when managing both practice and university workloads simultaneously.
What is your experience like studying with Northumbria University?
In my opinion, Northumbria is an excellent provider of the apprenticeship scheme. They tailor their programme to give apprenticeship students the best possible learning experience, incorporating both creative freedom from university projects and the real-life scenarios that are seen within the practice environment. The tutors are understanding of the unpredictability that working life can bring and are always willing to support students when situations arise, whether that be to offer flexible tutorials or negotiate deadlines if both practice and university workloads coincide.
How have you benefitted from the apprenticeship training?
The support I have received from both tutors and colleagues alike has been invaluable in shaping my future career. Being able to earn alongside gaining my qualifications has been a huge benefit to me and has opened up doors that wouldn’t have been possible through traditional full-time education. The mixture between academia and working practice allows for a holistic professional development which will shape me into a well-rounded architect once I complete my qualifications.
Amelia’s story highlights the incredible opportunities an apprenticeship can offer — combining hands-on experience, academic growth, and invaluable support from both university and workplace mentors. If you're considering a career in architecture or exploring alternative routes to professional qualification, an apprenticeship might be the perfect fit for you.
