Study Abroad - Kurt Sauer

Name: Kurt Sauer

Degree: Media Management

Home University: Hochschule Mittweida, Germany

When did you study at Northumbria University?

Semester one of the academic year 2017/18.

What subject did you study at Northumbria?

Marketing and Advertising

Why did you decide to do Study Abroad?

I wanted to get to know another culture, new people and put myself in an unknown environment, so I have to cope with the new situation and use that skill for my future life.

Why did you decide to come to Northumbria University?

Northumbria was one of the many partner universities of my home institution, but the campus, the Northumberland and Newcastle totally blew my mind. Newcastle was a bigger city than my home town, but still small enough for me.

What is your favourite memory of being at Northumbria?

One of my favourite things were the evenings when I got myself a little midnight snack from the kitchen and met all my flatmates who separately had the same idea. Then we were talking for hours in the kitchen.

Did you find living in Newcastle expensive?

The accommodation was quite expensive for what you got, but the normal living costs were quite okay.

How will you use your experience of Studying Abroad at Northumbria in the future?

Northumbria has a much bigger focus on advertising than my home institution, where studies concentrate more on media production. In my future life I’ll combine both and apply the media theories learned at Northumbria to make better ads.

What advice would you give to a student who is thinking of coming to Northumbria to Study Abroad?

Use the many many offers to meet new people, go partying although it’s super cold to go without jacket (yes, that’s pretty weird for us foreigners. In Germany you can bring your jacket to the club, give it to the staff and get it back later), and maybe go in summer. And never miss a chance to go to the coast, it’s magical.
