This course would suit healthcare practitioners working in the area of palliative care and covers the following topics:
- The physiology of pain and pain theories
- Different types of pain
- The psychological consequences of pain
- Assessment of pain and symptoms
- Pharmacological interventions
- Non-pharmacological interventions
- Common symptoms in advanced disease
- Emergencies in palliative care
- End of life issues

This module is focussed on patients who have palliative care needs, and will enable you to critically examine your practice when caring for this vulnerable group of patients. The philosophy underpinning this module is that accurate assessment is the key to managing pain and symptoms in advanced disease and that effective relief is the essence of quality of life.
This module will enable you to develop advanced skill and knowledge related to complex pain and symptom management, and identify best practice based on the evidence. You will be encouraged to consider the many components that contribute to the delivery of quality palliative care, and to consider the holistic needs of the patient and their carers. You will also have the opportunity to reflect and explore personal experiences arising from your own clinical practice in order to enhance your professional practice in the management of symptoms in advanced disease. Generally this will be considered in relation to advanced level practice.

1. Demonstrate an in-depth understanding of a variety of symptoms and pain that cause distress in advanced disease.
2. Critically evaluate the need for assessment skills and the usefulness of tools for effective symptom management.
3. Appraise the contribution of the multi-disciplinary team in the effective management of pain and symptoms in advanced disease
4. Explore the legal and ethical consequences of clinical practice in palliative care.
5. Consider the quality of life dimension in relation to effective pain and symptom control in advanced disease.
