NEBOSH National General Certificate in Occupational Health and Safety (Part-Time)

Holders of the NEBOSH National General Certificate are entitled to Associate Membership (AIOSH) of the Institution of Occupational Safety and Health (IOSH). The qualification also meets the academic requirements for Technical Membership (Tech IOSH) of IOSH

What does the course involve?
- With in-depth focus on the things that matter, the NEBOSH National General Certificate covers:
- How to effectively manage health and safety
- How to identify and control common workplace hazards
- How to measure if you’ve been successful
- The UK’s key legal requirements
Risk assessment is central to the qualification. Through study and workplace application, successful learners will be able to:
- Confidently carry out risk assessments
- Develop and implement a detailed action plan
- Manage and minimise workplace risks
- Support and develop your company’s health and safety culture
There are two modules, each with an associated assignment (an open book exam and a report). Unlike the previous Certificate syllabus, all of the assessments are now taken remotely and there are no formal examinations. The modules are:
NG1 – Management of Health and Safety (29 taught hours; 20 self-study hours and 4 hours for the assessment). This unit is assessed via an open book examination to assess what you know. This is scenario based and will include a closing interview, you will be asked questions about your submission.
NG2 – Risk assessment (39 taught hours; 20 self-study hours and 3 hours for the assessment). This unit is assessed via the completion of a written practical risk assessment to assess what you can do. Learners will complete a risk assessment and develop an action plan for their workplace – this is immediately useful and valuable for the workplace.
This modern qualification combines activities, learning and interactive materials to provide you with an interesting and engaging experience. It focuses on key skills that means you can instantly apply the knowledge you gain and add value to your organisation.
Assessments are marked by external examiners appointed by NEBOSH. These examiners are chosen for their experience and expertise to ensure that learners are assessed by the very best from our industry.

- Why we should manage workplace health and safety
- How health and safety management systems work and what they look like
- Managing risk – understanding people and processes
- Health and safety monitoring and measuring
NG2 – Risk assessment (39 taught hours; 20 self-study hours and 3 hours for the assessment). This unit is assessed via the completion of a written practical risk assessment to assess what you can do. Learners will complete a risk assessment and develop an action plan for their workplace – this is immediately useful and valuable.
The module covers the following topics:
- Physical and psychological health
- Musculoskeletal health
- Chemical and biological agents
- General workplace issues
- Work equipment
- Fire
- Electricity
The course is delivered via online sessions. Recordings of sessions will also be available. Assessments are completed remotely, so there is no need to attend the University.
The modules are taught through a series of interactive lectures during which the topics are related to workplace experiences of class members. In addition, videos, slides and examples of practical inspections are incorporated into the sessions so that the material is kept relevant and interesting.
Sessions run on a Wednesday 6.30pm-9pm
There are no entry requirements for this qualification, however it is important that learners have a suitable standard of English language in order to understand and articulate the concepts contained in the syllabus.
NEBOSH recommends that learners undertaking this qualification should reach a minimum standard of English equivalent to an International English Language Testing System (IELTS) score of 6.0 or higher in IELTS tests.
The qualification looks at general workplace issues and can be applied in many sectors. On completion of the qualification, learners will be able to:
- Justify the need for health and safety improvements
- Advise on duties under the main pieces of UK health and safety legislation
- Help their organisation to manage contractors
- Work within a health and safety management system
- Positively influence health and safety culture and behaviour
- Carry out a general risk assessment (using a 5-step approach) of their workplace
- Recognise workplace changes and their impacts and understand how to minimise these impacts
- Develop basic safe systems of work that include emergency arrangements and know when to use a permit-to-work system
- Take part in incident investigations; and
- Help their employer check the effectiveness of the health and safety management system through monitoring, auditing and review.
