MW0631 - The Professional Midwife: Consolidation as Student and Scholar

What will I learn on this module?

This module completes your development as a student and a scholar in line with the NMC Future Midwife Standards (NMC 2019).

You will have the opportunity to consolidate your understanding of evidence-based practice and to contribute to the understanding of an aspect of midwifery practice by undertaking an evidence review and thematic analysis (SPM1.4, SPM 5.7,) which culminates in you undertaking a Critical Evaluation of Midwifery Practice in a Capstone Project. Differing research philosophies, methodologies and approaches will be explored to support this development. The module and project will further develop your academic writing style and understanding of the research process (SPM1.5) to enable possible publication of future research and practice development.

You will consolidate your understanding of the impact of professional and personal attributes on the role of the midwife and practice development and improvement. Concepts such as, organisational contexts, values and discourses, local and national priorities will be explored (SPM3.2). You will further develop your understanding of personal and professional qualities relating to communication such as, advocacy, and effective partnerships with women and how these may impact on professional practice and practice development.

Throughout the module you will have continued support from your personal tutor who will facilitate reflection on your personal and professional development, plus you will be allocated to a subject specific supervision group that will utilise peer support towards completion of your Capstone project. The project will involve the selection of an aspect of midwifery practice which you will critique using research and practice evidence and apply this to contemporary woman centred midwifery care (SPM3.21, SPM3.23, SPM 5.13.4)

The module will assist you to deconstruct and reconstruct practice (SPM5.16, SPM 5.17) using in depth analysis of the evidence base, creative thinking, alternative theoretical perspectives relevant midwifery theory.

How will I learn on this module?

In this module, you will learn through a combination of lectures, seminars, and supervision groups. The supervision groups will include presentation of exploratory work with peer and facilitator feedback and support, including enquiry-based learning and debates. You will learn by preparing and giving feedback to peers, this preparatory work will be achieved by engaging in guided and independent study. There will be lecturer guided materials which will include blended interactive learning packages, electronic and / or face to face lectures. You will be supported to choose an element of midwifery practice that to study in more detail and with support from a project supervisor within a peer group you will prepare for your module assessment, the Capstone project. In this module, we advise you to also learn by reading, which is vital for your academic and clinical development. Reading will provide breadth and depth of knowledge to enhance the evidence base for your project and subsequent clinical practice.

How will I be supported academically on this module?

All students will be able to access academic support via tutorials with their allocated supervisor and peer group, including reflective support from their personal tutor for continuity, however student centred learning will be supported to continue to develop your independence and confidence to manage your learning and development. The academic support will aim to engage the students and the supervisors in constructive discussion regarding the chosen area of practice and relate this to the assessment criteria. The use of peer support is a vital component of this critical discussion and generating ideas, which is also utilised during this module.
The University Library will offer you further support with development of level six learning skills, including academic writing, academic reading, searching, and referencing.

How will I be assessed?

Formative:

Presentation of seminar work
Supervision groups with peer and supervisor feedback: this will include formative presentation of elements of the Capstone project, with feedback, plus providing constructive critique to a fellow peer of their work.

Summative:

Capstone Project – 8,000 words – Evidence review and thematic analysis of a selected midwifery practice topic

Module abstract

The module will complete your midwifery research journey on the BSc Midwifery Studies equipping you with the personal reflexive insights and professional skills to effectively use evidence and identify potential opportunities for practice and evidence development. Your learning will culminate in the production of a Capstone Project, involving the detailed evidence review and thematic analysis of a woman centred midwifery practice topic, which involves application of personal and professional components. The module complements the research rich learning in the curriculum, utilising a range of teaching and learning strategies. This includes seminars and peer and facilitator supervision groups, which provide an experiential hand on approach and involve discussion, debate and challenge which will facilitate your developing insights and skills of personal reflexivity and creativity essential to the development of your capstone project.
