Influence the next generation.

Northumbria University has a long-established record for the provision of high quality Initial Teacher Education. This BA (Hons) Primary Education course gives you the opportunity to work with the whole primary age range of 3–11, with the opportunity to specialise in either the 3-7 or 7-11 age range. The degree is underpinned by a philosophy that has at its heart the right of every child to have the opportunity to the best education possible.

As a teacher you will be in the position of influencing the learning and development of the next generation. These children will need to be able to meet the changing environment of this century and become creative, innovative and flexible life-long learners.

We believe that to enable children to thrive, you, as a teacher in charge of the learning environment, must be creative, motivated, flexible, sensitive to and eager to learn from and with the children in your care.

Your Learning Experience

On this fast-paced degree course, school-based placements form a significant part of your learning. From day one, we will equip you with the skills to inspire and educate young children, combining theory with professional practice that will enhance your critical and reflective abilities.

Your time at Northumbria will enable you to develop your own thinking, learning and creativity, and in just three years you can be recommended for Qualified Teaching Status (QTS) as accredited by the School of Communities ad Education

Plus one of the following:

  • Additional:

    Non-standard entry qualifications will be assessed on an individual basis.

    Applicants should have both awareness and understanding of current educational issues and the ability to critically discuss these. It is advantageous to have experience of working with children in an informal setting, e.g. Sunday School, Guides or Cubs. Other factors that may enhance an application include:

    • Duke of Edinburgh's Award Scheme
    • Charity work
    • Leadership responsibilities, e.g. prefect; sporting achievements
    • Music qualifications and theatrical involvement
    • Sport coaching

    Mandatory Skills Tests

    All trainee teachers are required to pass skills tests in numeracy and literacy before they can be recommended for the award of qualified teacher status (QTS). Applicants to ITT courses which start after 1 July 2013 will be required to pass the skills tests before starting their course.

    The numeracy and literacy skills tests:

    • cover the core skills that teachers need to fulfil their professional role in schools, rather than the subject knowledge required for teaching. This is to ensure all teachers are competent in numeracy and literacy, regardless of their specialism;
    • do not replace the GCSE grade C equivalence entry requirement;
    • are set in the context of the professional role of a teacher; all questions use real data and information which teachers are likely to encounter; and
    • are computerised and can be taken at any of approximately 150 test centres throughout the UK.

    Entrants for Initial Teacher Education programmes from September 2013 entry need to be aware of the Government regulations regarding mandatory ‘Professional skills tests for trainee teachers’, in numeracy and literacy. These will be taken immediately after application and prior to any offer being made.

    Applicants are advised that they will receive one free test and two resit opportunities which will be self-funded. If applicants fail three tests, resits will not be allowed within a 24 month period, therefore it is strongly advised that applicants visit the Department for Education website to obtain further information and sample practice papers.

    If you’d like to find out more about what is required, please visit the official Skills Tests page at education.gov.uk

    In addition we also offer additional support to all of our applicants, in advance of their mandatory National Literacy and Numeracy Test, which should be complete by the point of enrolment.

    For further information please contact Admissions on 0191 243 7900 or email hs.admissions@northumbria.ac.uk

    Please Note: we do not accept deferred applications for this programme.

    FAQs

    Do I need to have passed both skills tests before I attend an interview with an ITT provider?

    You should have taken the skills tests as soon as possible after submitting an application for an ITT course. You can book your skills test appointments in advance. Providers will use the skills tests results to inform their decisions about applicants; those who have passed the tests before interview will be in a stronger position for selection.

    Why are there two separate registration systems for the skills tests?

Accessibility and Student Inclusion

Northumbria University is committed to developing an inclusive, diverse and accessible campus and wider University community and are determined to ensure that opportunities we provide are open to all.

We are proud to work in partnership with AccessAble to provide Detailed Access Guides to our buildings and facilities across our City, Coach Lane and London Campuses. A Detailed Access Guide lets you know what access will be like when you visit somewhere. It looks at the route you will use getting in and what is available inside. All guides have Accessibility Symbols that give you a quick overview of what is available, and photographs to show you what to expect. The guides are produced by trained surveyors who visit our campuses annually to ensure you have trusted and accurate information.

You can use Northumbria’s AccessAble Guides anytime to check the accessibility of a building or facility and to plan your routes and journeys. Search by location, building or accessibility feature to find the information you need.

We are dedicated to helping students who may require additional support during their student journey and offer 1-1 advice and guidance appropriate to individual requirements.
