Benefits and Tax Credits

Studying at university can come with financial pressures, especially if you're raising children, managing a health condition, or caring for others.

If you're a UK (Home) student studying full-time or part-time, you may be eligible for benefits, tax credits, or grants that can ease the financial load and help you focus on your studies.

Your eligibility will depend on things such as your course, your living situation, and your personal circumstances. But knowing where to start is important. You should always make sure that you use trusted tools and charities when checking your eligibility and that you keep your benefit providers updated if your situation changes.

And if you’re not sure where to turn to whilst at University? Our specialist advisors are here to help and can guide you through the support available so that you're able to make informed decisions.

Welfare Benefits and Universal Credit

Some UK (Home) students are eligible for Universal Credit or other government support, particularly if you:

  • Have children
  • Are a care leaver or estranged from your parents
  • Have a disability or long-term health condition
  • Are over the age of 66
  • Live with a partner who qualifies for Universal Credit

While most full-time UK (Home) students can’t claim benefits like Jobseeker’s Allowance, there are important exceptions. Further information can be found on the below websites:

  • Turn2Us – Universal Credit Guide
  • GOV.UK – Universal Credit for Students
  • entitledto – Student Income and Universal Credit Calculator

Attending university is possible and practical with a family. If you're raising children whilst you study, help and support is available through:

  • Childcare Grants
  • Parents’ Learning Allowance
  • Special Support Grant (which won’t reduce your benefit entitlement)

Further information and guidance can be found on the following websites:

  • GOV.UK - Childcare Grant information and advice for parents
  • Gingerbread - support for single parents

If you are already receiving Child Tax Credit or Working Tax Credit, you may be able to continue your claim whilst studying, especially if you're:

  • On a low income
  • Studying full-time with children

New claims now fall under Universal Credit, but it’s important to get tailored advice. Please see the below website for further information:

If you're already receiving Disability Living Allowance (DLA), Personal Independence Payment (PIP), or Employment and Support Allowance (ESA) your student funding won’t be affected, and you may still be eligible for additional grants and benefits. You can find out further information by visiting:

As a full-time student, you don’t have to pay Council Tax. If you live with non-students, your household may still receive a 25% discount. You may also be eligible for housing-related support. Visit the following websites for further information and advice:
