Geography Facilities and Equipment

Find out more about the facilities and equipment you can access within the Department of Geography and Environmental Sciences.

Whether your subject matter is plant or animal material, soil, sediment or water, our range of specialist and general use facilities will support you. Throughout your work, whether undergraduate, postgraduate or research, you will be able to measure, analyse, experiment and model the elements that make up our environment.   


Qualitative Research Suite

This is a dedicated space for staff and students to undertake qualitative research including interviews, focus groups and small group workshops. The Suite is equipped with audio and visual recording capabilities, specialist transcription and analysis software, a large screen television and is soundproofed for privacy. The space can also be used to analyse sensitive information not suitable for use in open access study areas.

Geography Measurement and Analysis Laboratory

This multi-purpose laboratory has flexible bench space to enable you to work on a variety of projects. Get up close with pollen, fauna and sediments using transmitted and incident light microscopes, spectrophotometers and a mastersizer for particle size analysis. Experiment using a wide range of laboratory equipment, with fume hoods for chemical extraction work. Go on to model your findings using our specialist 3D software, or our general and specialist ecological statistical packages, or undertake environmental dispersion modelling.

Palaeo and Environmental Research Laboratory

From peat and lake cores, to cave deposits and flowers, this space is intended for research use and to allow our specialist technicians to prepare samples, such as pollen extracts. In here you will find a mass spectrometer, elemental analyser, high precision drill, centrifuges, refrigeration and fume hoods, as well as a dedicated space for chemical extraction work linked to research in environmental geochemistry and health.

Soil and Sediment Processing Laboratory

This dedicated space allows you to prepare sediments and soils for analysis, as well as carry out slope stability experiments – particularly for those doing dissertation research. Sediment and soil sieves, an oven, furnace, refrigerator, Tullgren funnels and slope stability equipment will all help you to achieve your research objectives.

Natural World Case Studies

We are not confined to what we see on campus. When studying physical geography and the natural world, you may have the opportunity to visit a variety of regional, national and international locations where you will practice and implement your investigative field techniques like sketching and morphological analysis. In the past students have visited Tenerife in Spain. You will also define your data collection skills such as collecting soil samples and GIS readings.

Urban Case Studies

Exploring the human element of geography allows for opportunities to visit regional and international case study sites to understand and reflect on issues such as globalisation, housing, space and society. Past students have visited Amsterdam to examine social and cultural boundaries relating to tolerance.

The Zone

The Zone is a recently opened 24/7 light and airy open plan area popular with students undertaking group work or individual study. Computer work stations with large screens help students tackle group assignments comfortably.

The Hub

The Hub is a working space with computer stations and large round tables to facilitate individual working and group work. Based on the second floor of Ellison Building B-block, it is ideally located for breaks in lectures and seminars. The Hub can be accessed from 7am – 10pm weekdays and from 8am – 5pm on weekends.

Further Self Study Areas for Engineering & Environment Students

Pandon Basement and Studios

Recently refurbished, Pandon Basement is a 24/7 open access area with a range of computing facilities. Specialist studios with industry standard software including music technology, games, animation and green screen filming are also housed here. In addition there is a Go Café in the Basement and vending machines as well as soft seating so that students can take a break without needing to venture too far.

The Matrix

The Matrix is located on the ground floor of Pandon Building. Soft seating and interactive workstations make it an ideal place to relax or have a group discussion. The matrix can be accessed from 7am – 10pm weekdays and from 8am – 5pm on weekends.

Wynne Jones Student Areas

Wynne Jones Student Areas have a number of areas available including Project Space - a purpose built space that is used to exhibit student work at degree show time. It is also home to computer stations for individual study and there is room for group discussions. These spaces can be accessed from 7am – 10pm weekdays and from 8am – 5pm on weekends.

The Space

The Space is an open plan area with individual computer work stations, soft seating and a meeting room to enable individual working and group discussions. Based on the third floor of Ellison Building E-Block, it is ideally located near Physics and Electrical Engineering teaching laboratories and our Think Physics, Think Engineering Outreach laboratory. The Space can be accessed from 7am – 10pm weekdays and from 8am – 5pm on weekends.
